The recent period has significantly redefined our perceptions on changing the workplace. Home offices have begun to look more and more like corporate workstations. The makeshift arrangements of "corners" for work were no longer sufficient for users, spending more and more time in them. The seemingly simple task of adapting a corporate desk to a home interior turned out to be a more demanding procedure, requiring a professional approach. It was time to learn lessons and design thoughtful spaces, adapted for comfortable and productive work.
Why has our home office started to change?
Every employee, delegated to work remotely, after being momentarily enamored of the advantages of this form, faced the need to create a space that replaces, and not just simulate the company's workstation. Those trying to design the space on their own, sought support in the media, reading guides or closely observing: how do the people on the other side of the screen, visible in the camera lens, deal with the problem?

The first determinants of the proceedings were certainly truistic dogmas about the need to locate the desk in a sunny spot, surround it with greenery and decorate it with a bookcase full of books... or at least their covers, clearly visible during video-communication with co-workers/clients.
This phase of self-design usually ended with the feeling that the visual effect was almost achieved. However, the functionality of our home office while offline certainly began to gain importance with each passing day.
Home working vs. working from home
So how to create a professional home office that fulfills its default function? Time has shown that most of us have wrongly put an equals sign between a home office and a work at home job. The fundamental difference between the two lies in the way the work space is adapted to the new environment. The strategy of spontaneously "adding" a temporary workstation to a currently vacant space is giving way to the realization that a home office should not differ significantly in its characteristics from a corporate one. The theoretical assumption is, of course, difficult to put into practice without significant changes in the entire interior design, but it is very possible and, in the case of people working at home for a longer period, even necessary.

Space available, space needed
When designing zones, intended for remote work, it is worth first thinking about the specifics of our work. This will allow us to determine, among other things, how much space we (we and other household members) need to work comfortably? To what extent does the place need to be isolated? Which of the rooms available to us is optimal for rearrangement? For obvious reasons, the vast majority of us do not have a separate room at our disposal, so we entrust designers with the mission of adapting the living room, hall or bedroom. In both cases, the arrangement begins with the focal point of any home office, namely the desk.

The work surface is just the beginning
Everyone expects a solid, ergonomic and aesthetically pleasing set. To meet these expectations, it must be made of the highest quality materials. Everyone recognizes the correlation between the degree of use of, for example, kitchen furniture and bedroom furniture. Office furniture is used more often and much more intensively than the others. Thus, both the quality of the chosen boards, metals, fabrics, furniture hardware and the precision of their manufacture will have a direct impact on their lifespan.

An important aspect, projecting ergonomics, is the organization of the space on the countertop and underneath it. It is also worth taking care of isolation from home noise by using acoustic walls and panels. Customizing the size of the tabletop, choosing a rack (fixed or adjustable) and accessories such as dressers and pedestals are other important aspects of home office design. And if it will be used by more than one person, it should be easily modifiable.
Home office or home office?
Ergonomic qualities should be given priority. However, it is worth remembering that the furniture, becoming part of our home, should at least match the class of the rest of the furnishings and correspond to our image.
In recent months, in addition to home studios, so-called home offices have become increasingly popular. Presidents, executives, managers are recognizing the need to furnish their studio to a standard identical to that of the company's headquarters. Home offices are distinguished by the class of furniture and details used, emphasizing the rank of the room and its owner.

Regardless of the specifics of our work, our position, function, industry, let's make sure together that the home office helps to perform the same duties as always, in a place seemingly familiar to us, yet new.
