In an exceptionally prestigious location, in the very center of Wroclaw, right next to the Oder River, and in good company - because between the representative offices of the Ossolineum National Institute and Wroclaw University - stands the long-neglected building of the former Faculty of Pharmacy of the Medical University. It looks like next year the building will regain its former splendor and receive a new function. Maćków Pracownia Projektowa is responsible for the reconstruction and adaptation of the building and the interior design.

TheNeo-Renaissance building on Grodzka Street, designed by Theodor Milczewski, was built in 1866 as the headquarters of the Pharmaceutical Institute. During World War II, the building was nearly eighty percent destroyed, but in 1946 the inaugural lecture of the newly established Pharmaceutical Department at the Faculty of Medicine of the University and Technical University of Wroclaw (later the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Medical Academy) was held within its walls. In 2011, the Medical Academy announced a tender for the sale of the building. Eventually, the edifice was bought by Terra Contor Polska in 2013. The investor decided to convert the building into an office building called L'UNI and create over 3,500 square meters of office space on four floors.

Work began last August to restore the building to its pre-war shape, and a stratigraphic survey was being conducted to help determine the original color of the facade. Work is scheduled to be completed this month to bring the block to its shell. Installation and finishing crews have also already begun their work, including on the building's exterior, where plaster and stucco are being restored, and work will soon begin on restoring the busts on the pilasters' finial from Grodzka Street. A major change will be the construction of an unusual glass roof, which is expected to allow functional use of the top floor and provide a view of the river and neighboring Słodowa Island.

The completion of the structural elements of L'UNI, as well as the creation of the structure for the glass roof, is an important stage of the revitalization project. The glass will be covered with a ceramic print. This innovative solution will highlight the historic nature of the investment and preserve the historic character of the facade. The only similar gradient print solution in Europe has been used in London, explains Waldemar Weintritt, Project Engineer at JP Weber consulting firm, which is managing the building's renovation project.

The basement of the historic edifice is planned to house a conference room and a checkroom for cyclists, while the remaining floors will be used for office space of various sizes and leisure areas. The first users of the building will be able to use its space in just a few months, in the second quarter of 2022. Will the building, after renovation, become another real ornament in the collection of buildings forming the southern frontage of Grodzka Street? We very much hope so, especially since just "behind its back" another important object will be built - the minimalist and monolithic block of the Princes Lubomirski Museum designed by Warsaw studio WXCA.
