What to make a terrace from? Solid foundations, i.e. durable construction for years to come

Composite decking on aluminum joists

Composite decking is a modern and impressive way to have a durable terrace. What to do to make it decorate our garden for as long as possible? It's easy! First of all, take care of the right substrate and use as the basis of the terrace a reliable and durable system of aluminum joists - such as the novelty from JAF Polska.

Composite boards as a terrace covering

Durability, resistance to moisture, carefree use, a multitude of available designs and durable colors - these are just some of the advantages of modern composite boards. However, the three-dimensional surface of the boards and the faithful reproduction of the grain (such as Gardin Natur by JAF) is a separate topic. Why?

Joists - the basis of good terrace contruction

Even the highest quality decking will not make up for mistakes made at the substructure stage. These include: poorly prepared substrate, careless placement and improper selection of joists. With wood decking, we assume that the material for the joists should be at least the same density and durability as the decking boards. Exotic wood joist under exotic decking, larch under larch, but what under composite?

Substructure, construction and installation of the terrace

Trying to save on these elements we lose threefold. We shorten the life of the entire terrace and expose the boards to the danger of mechanical damage. In this way we expose ourselves to additional expenses and the risk of voiding the warranty. Composite boards should not be laid on any surface. We can choose from the recommended concrete screed, local supports (either glass or posts), metal and wooden structures.

"The joist must be isolated from the ground, and the ground must have a slope. Lay the joists on shims, which additionally help drain water. As a result, any precipitation (mixed with dirt from the terrace) runs off into the garden, and we avoid puddles standing under the terrace. The joists should be attached to a stable and firm surface. A concrete screed with an appropriate slope (a minimum of 1%, or 1 cm per meter) that allows water to drain freely along the grooves of the board works best. The joists are laid on shims perpendicular to the direction of runoff. The screed also solves the problem of unwanted vegetation (climbing from the underside of the terrace). We can use fast-drying mortars. Note that the concrete also needs to be insulated. We fix the joists to the ground with stainless steel screws. Screws made of stainless materials are a guarantee of peace of mind. The same principle applies to the joists." - suggests Piotr Lisowski, JAF Polska expert

System aluminum and composite joists - which is better?

The flagship advantage of composite decking is that it does not need to be renewed periodically. For the same reason, composite joists are the most popular solution. However, it is worth considering a much more durable solution, namely system aluminum joists.

"The system aluminum joist has practically only advantages. It is extremely durable and is not afraid of biodegradation. It requires no maintenance, nor does it rust. Another unbeatable advantage is the rigidity of the structure. We can use it regardless of the type of substrate we have. The aluminum subfloor system makes installation easier and faster. Aluminum joist is also a good solution to the problem of too high a spout (too low a height to the threshold of a window or balcony door). This is made possible by the high load-bearing capacity that is obtained at the same time with a small cross-section. Important: system aluminum joist for terraces and rectangular aluminum profile are two different things. The system joist wins in rigidity and holds the screws better. It owes this to the special corridors in which they are fixed." - explains Darina Lazarova, an expert from JAF Poland

We can also bet on a homogeneous material and choose composite joists for the set. In their favor is the price, although they are inferior to aluminum in terms of durability and rigidity. The system joist made of aluminum also has a smaller contact area with the board. It ensures proper ventilation and thus extends the life of the boards. It is more rigid and holds screws better.

How to make a terrace yourself

Once we have an even and hard substrate - we can proceed to the installation of joists. Lay the joists at intervals of 35 cm. Larger gaps result in excessive bending of the boards, and this can lead to damage. We drill the joists at equal intervals. Their exact distance depends on the type and rigidity of the joists used. We screw the joists on washers to the ground. Lack of insulation leads to moisture, and moisture leads to the destruction of the terrace. We absolutely install the joints of the boards (wooden, as well as composite) on two separate joists. Good practice is that one and the other should be at least 1 cm apart.

Do you have a knack for DIY, a bit of experience in the subject and the right tools? This means that you are most likely able to assemble such a terrace yourself. Remembering the basics, you will assemble it in accordance with the art. Detailed instructions for assembly depend on the chosen system and conditions. However, it is not space technology.

Terrace design wizard - a useful tool.

If you are not sure about the layout of the joists - you can use, for example, the Terrace Wizard available on the JAF Polska website[it also allows you to quote for materials, requires logging into the portal - editor's note]. The Wizard will suggest the distribution of the joists and suggest a matching installation system. What's more, it will count all the necessary mounting accessories for us. During installation, it is necessary to stick to the installation instructions of the respective manufacturer, and if in doubt, it is worth asking for advice from a professional.

Elegant minimize invisible mounting system

Installation without screws is a noticeable advantage of composite. On composite terraces, unlike wooden ones, you will not experience visible mounting elements. Dedicated invisible mounting systems, based on plastic or stainless steel clips, serve this purpose.

Composite decking - durability and maintenance

Combined with aluminum joists, we get a terrace that can perfectly cope with changing weather conditions. Of course, composite is not an indestructible material. Moving heavy objects (with sharp edges) can imprint the surface. It is also harmed by grease (most heated), spilled wine or coffee. That's why it's worth equipping yourself with a special care product (such as Owatrol Compo Clean) to remove tougher dirt. However, barring extreme cases - day-to-day care of a composite terrace is limited to sweeping sand and washing (with enough water and dishwashing liquid). The rest of the time we lay out the deck chairs, invite loved ones and enjoy the successful investment together. Composite and system aluminum joists are an all-weather terrace.
