Cemex Poland bets on renewable energy

28 of February '25

Cemex Poland is consistently investing in renewable energy. Under an agreement with EDP Energia Polska, which is part of the European leader in solar solutions, photovoltaic installations will be built at several Polish Cemex plants, with a total capacity exceeding 14 MWp. The investment in the new installations is another example of the company's commitment to the global "Future in Action" strategy, which aims to mitigate climate change.

There is currently one photovoltaic farm in operation at Cemex's Polish plants, located on the site of a ready-mix concrete plant in Pruszkow. New photovoltaic installations will soon be built at cement plants in Chelm, Rudniki and Gdynia, as well as concrete plants in Myslowice, Warsaw Annopol, Lublin, Szczecin and Gdansk. The installations will be successively commissioned in accordance with the formal, legal and engineering processes. The first energy from the new contract should flow in the second quarter of 2025.

The project will be carried out in cooperation with EDP Energia Poland, under the PV as a Service model. Under the 15-year contract, EDP will install and operate the photovoltaic installations, supplying clean energy to Cemex plants.

Cemex has ambitious decarbonization goals, and investment in renewable energy is an important step in reducing emissions. The concluded contract is crucial in this context, as it will guarantee us access to green energy in the long term. In addition, the said contract will enable us to diversify the sources of energy supplying our plants

- says Michał Węglorz, Regional Negotiator for Energy at Cemex Polska.

We are pleased that Cemex Polska, as a leader in its industry, has chosen photovoltaic solutions from EDP to pursue its ambitious decarbonization goals. This cooperation is part of our mission to support the energy transition and provide clean energy for every type of industry. We are confident that Cemex's investments in renewable energy will contribute to building a sustainable future and inspire other companies in the energy-intensive sector. At EDP, we are committed to being a reliable partner for our customers and working with them to implement projects that have a real impact on reducing emissions and protecting the climate. In Poland, we have already installed close to 270 MWp of power in various facilities, thus supporting business in building a sustainable future

- says Ireneusz Kulka, Country Lead EDP in Poland.

Clean energy for Cemex plants

Cemex's first photovoltaic farm, located on the site of a ready-mix concrete plant in Pruszkow, was established in 2021. In subsequent years, the installation was expanded - in addition to the installation of photovoltaic panels, further investments included telecommunications infrastructure, an unmanned subscriber transformer station, and underground power lines.

The creation of solar installations to power its own production facilities is part of Cemex's "Future in Action" strategy to combat climate change. Already, the electricity used at Cemex Poland's plants comes from 90% renewable sources

- informs Jacek Nowosad, Manager for Development and Implementation of Low Carbon Energy and Renewable Energy Projects in the EMEA region at Cemex.

Noteworthy in this context is, among others, the contract with the Norwegian company Statkraft, which began supplying Polish Cemex plants with energy from domestic wind and photovoltaic farms at the beginning of 2025. The contract with Statkraft will last for 8 years, securing 30% of Cemex Poland's energy needs.
