The aesthetic often refers to Gothic-style architecture , Baroque and retro elements from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Characteristic of this style is nostalgia for the past and a love of the classics.

Books are a key element of this style. Dark Academia-inspired interiors are full of bookcases, which often reach from floor to ceiling. They are, of course, filled with striking hardcover volumes.
