The project PONADOPOCENTAL HOUSE is a unique idea, originating in Poznan's Swierczewo district. Its creator is Michal Kościuk - a student at the University of Arts in Poznań. Inspired by the rich heritage of his family roots, he decided to create something more than just a building. His HOUSE is an extraordinary journey through generations, where history and modernity intertwine into one unique story.

family history
The house in Poznan's Swierczew district was built by Michal Kościuk's grandparents , Maria and Leon, in the early 1960s. Their goal was to create a place that could be a home for both their parents , Anna and Witold, and their children , Leszek and Piotr, Michal's father. In the 1990s, it also became home to Michal's mother, Hanna, and soon thereafter to him and his sister, who were the fourth generation of residents.

The characteristic "Gierkowski cubes"
The building is located in the central part of the estate, which is now an integral part of Poznan's Wilda district. Swierczewo is distinguished by an abundance of green areas, contributing to its attractiveness and unique climate. Most of the estate consists of single-family semi-detached or terraced buildings of similar volume and form. The dominant buildings are the so-called Gierkowski cubes, characterized by simplicity of form and ease of construction. Such an approach makes it possible to carry out renovation work on one's own.

During the period of house formation, it was a common problem to get building materials. Even the basic ones, such as cement or hollow blocks, required standing in lines, using acquaintances or even offering "incentives" in the form of various material goods. An excellent reflection of that reality is what one of the respondents said in an interview conducted by Anna Wylegala, a sociologist and author of the book "Był dwór, nie ma dworu."
In general, even when they were still building a house, it was hard to buy something, material of some kind, or what. You couldn't buy anything. Neither brick, nor cement, nor... It was so very difficult to get it. It was so bit by bit, bit by bit to finish the house. And there were two apartments and such a kitchen, and a hallway.

Today's reality is quite different - the availability of materials and suppliers is huge, and the market itself functions dynamically and efficiently. Nevertheless, it is worth remembering the past and the effort that had to be put then to build your own house.
concept of expansion
The idea of expansion stems from the need for more space, reflecting the changing lifestyle and uses of the house. At the same time, the strong attachment to the place and its history is the main reason why the residents do not want to leave their family space. Michal Kościuk emphasizes the emotional attachment to the Spruce House:
Reason may say one thing, but in such cases it is the heart that chooses.

The new part of the building is characterized by a simple, geometric form. Its main purpose is to provide additional space for the living area and create a seamless connection between the interior of the house and the adjacent garden. Large glazing and carefully designed rooms promote the flow of light and air, while allowing the surrounding greenery to be enjoyed. This harmony between architecture and nature is a key element of the building's new image, emphasizing its character and connecting it to the beauty of its surroundings.
The new wing is planned to create an open living area, combining a living room, dining room and kitchen. To emphasize the character of the building, noble materials such as natural stone and parquet flooring were used. In addition, veneered furniture of subtle design becomes a complement to the modern interior, giving it a timeless character. The existing building will undergo a general renovation, during which the premises will be modernized and adapted to modern standards, partially changing their functions. The entire project is characterized by a harmonious combination of functionality and comfort with spatial aesthetics.

In the process of intensive urbanization to which cities are subjected, issues of development, redevelopment and renovation are increasingly common. Instead of building new facilities, the potential of existing structures is being appreciated, adapting them to changing needs and standards, using them in an effective, efficient and responsible manner for future generations. Upcycling is becoming an increasingly popular practice.
Michal Kościuk's project is not only a concept for the expansion of a building, but also a manifestation of concern for heritage and responsibility for the future. THE PONDERAGE HOUSE is an attempt to create a place that meets the needs of modern life, while integrating with the environment and the past, creating something unique and lasting. It represents a kind of manifesto of care for what is most precious: our place on earth. The young architect calls for reflection on the value of history and tradition and action to preserve them and pass them on to future generations.
