A unique rooftop in Sopot. Radisson Blu on the green

19 of October '20

Undulating terrain and grassy dunes overgrown with grass... this landscape can be found in Sopot not only near the beach. The Radisson Blu Hotel boasts a green roof in the center of the city. Such a solution is not only beautiful, but also ecological.

At first glance, this green area looks like an ordinary garden. Only the skylights reveal that there is a building underneath. In this facility, the green roof is designed to connect two buildings: a non-hotel pavilion and a conference center. In this way, a sense of wholeness is achieved. The roof flows seamlessly into the recreational area around the buildings.

low and high

The designers from Blue Grass Landscape Architecture, Artur Chmielewski and Jakub Nadolski, used two types of mats in this project - a low sedum mat and a higher also sedum mat, but with a predominance of grasses and herbs, so as to emphasize the striped pattern. Perennials and taller grass es like Chinese miscanthus were also planted. This adds variety to the landscape and gives an interesting visual effect.

small retention

Rain gardens are an additional feature of the space. They were designed where the roof connects to the ground, in the depressions of the land. As a result, the building meets the current requirements for the circulation of small rainwater retention. This brings tangible benefits for both users and nature. The use of small retention solutions supports the development of the environment and biodiversity in the area.

recreation area

The roof resembles a seascape or a fantasy land. The undulating terrain covered with grass and perennials is an interesting alternative to traditional roofing. In this case, the roof is part of the usable space. Hotel guests and conference center users can use it like a hotel park. This is an additional asset that can attract customers.
