The Kastrup Sea Bath is an architectural gem of Copenhagen's Ørestad district. It is located at the end of Amager beach. The degraded dock area has been transformed into a wooden space, serving as a place to sunbathe, rest, and relax. The Kastrup sea bathing area is one of Denmark's most charming, recognizable and popular vacation spots. The well-known Swedish bureau White Arkitekter is responsible for the project.

exploring form
The bathing area, affectionately known as „the snail,” consists of a pier, as well as a new beach and a service building equipped with toilets and changing rooms. It is 870 square meters of wooden pier, 70 square meters of changing rooms and 90 of a service building on land. The wooden pier extends from the shore and curves to form a southern circular enclosure. The pier gradually rises above sea level and is topped by a five-meter diving platform. The circular shape creates a concentric interior that provides shelter from the wind and is ideal for swimming and sunbathing. A bench is planned along the platform, and provides additional places for relaxation.

An important part of the concept was the integration of users. The Kastrup sea bathing area was designed as a multifunctional place for outdoor sports, and also allows for quiet evening swimming, exercise or play, regardless of age or mobility needs. Ramps and other special features allow less mobile users full access. The bathing area is free and open to the public.

designed for life
The dynamic sculptural form is a visible landmark from the beach, sea and air.
It resembles an amphitheater; from here one can see others and be seen. It was made of azobé, an African hardwood that is extremely durable and aesthetically pleasing. Azobé has the same lifespan as steel and is resistant to rot and woodworm, so the implementation will be enjoyed for generations to come.

At night and during the long dark periods of the off-season, the lighting emphasizes the sculptural nature of the project, enhancing the aesthetic experience for visitors, as well as ensuring their safety. A series of large overhead lamps reflect off the interior walls of the realization, gently washing over the entire pool space with warm white light. This warmth contrasts with the electric blue lighting behind the open stairs and diving platform. Dual lines of LED spotlights illuminate the walkway to the pier, making it easier to navigate in the dark.

Kastrup Strandpark
In 2006-2007, Danish studio OPLAND prepared a landscape plan for a new harbor promenade, bicycle parking and extensive site work for Tårnby. The park is a natural continuation of the sea bathing area designed by White Arkitekter. The new area was formed by adding about 30,000 cubic meters of clean soil—thus creating a distinctive hill formation.
