The Zodiac Warsaw Architecture Pavilion and the Andrzej Wajda Film Culture Center invite you to an online meeting devoted to the topic of cinema in the cultural life of the city. On a daily basis, we forget about the "idea of the cinema" and its place in the urban fabric. Among other things, the closure of cinemas has provoked thinking about these establishments - multiplexes and arthouse cinemas. How do they affect the city? We will hear the answers to these and other questions today!
An online meeting will be held today at 18:00 on the YouTube channel Zodiac of the Warsaw Architecture Pavilion.
Cinema as a place where the cultural life of the city takes place, an establishment where screenings and social gatherings take place, an epicenter where movie premiere nights take place. The artistic event of bringing a title to the screens is the moment of the spectacular emergence of the cinema - as a center of cultural life and a prestigious building of the city's architecture. A film premiere - where does it have more metropolitan flair: in a cinema with a long history or in a multiplex?
The guests invited to the debate will discuss the importance of the building for the nature of the event, which is the premiere of a film work. How does a cinema reflect the peculiarities of a city and the lifestyle of its residents, is it an important place for artistic communities, and to what extent does it influence the character of a city? What did these issues look like in each decade? What conclusions on the above issues were reached during the quarantine months, when cinema screenings became the object of dreams for viewers, filmmakers and cinema managers?
Reality vs. sentiment, memories and contemporary experiences of professionals associated with the operation of cinemas and film distribution, accounts supported by years of observations of the position of cinemas and the recent scarcity of the activities of these establishments in the urban fabric - all this will make up the debate under the title "Cinema in the cultural life of the city".
