60 hectares of park instead of new development in Lodz! Residents of the Janów estate have put their money where their mouth is

13 of July '21

Lodz will have a new park! It's all thanks to the persistence of very active residents of the Janow estate, who themselves came out to the authorities with an initiative to create a park. They emphasize that they wanted to protect the green, semi-wild area from further development. The authorities responded favorably to the proposal, resulting in the first activities aimed at creating a 60-hectare park. The deputy mayor of Lodz announces that this will be a highly innovative project and the first so-called public purpose investment.

Protecting a green area from development

The new park is to be built on 60 hectares of green, semi-wild land. The area is located between Rokicinska Street, Maciek z Bogdańca Street, Przybyszewskiego Street and the greenhouses on Augustów Street, in the Janów and Olechów neighborhoods. Among other things, there are plots of land that have different owners. Negotiations and the search for an agreement to protect the area from development will soon begin. Residents of the Janow estate, who proposed the creation of the park, were anxious that no more apartment blocks be built on the green area. A thousand people signed up for the proposal to create the park.

The idea of creating a park in Jan ow came from the residents themselves. A few weeks ago we met with them here, and they showed us around the area, showed us the places they consider most valuable, and proposed creating a park in this place ," says Adam Pustelnik, deputy mayor of Lodz.

fully innovative project

Adam Pustelnik announces that the park project in Janow will be fully innovative and implemented through a public purpose investment.

For the first time we will go the way of public purpose investment. This formula is most often used for transportation investments, road or rail infrastructure construction. We want to apply it for the first time to the creation of a green area ," explains Pustelnik.

The deputy mayor also assures that the park project will be consulted with residents of the neighborhood.

Once we know that no development will be built here, we can come up with ideas together about what can be created here. We will use the civic budget and determine together with neighbors from the entire estate what we would like to do ," says Barbara Stolarska, a resident of Janow.

In turn, Tomasz Kacprzak, a councilman, conveyed that the Lodz local government will take care of the green character of the area, as well as protect it from being concreted over.

We will not pour concrete alleys here, nor will we introduce large buildings. Residents want the park to retain its forest character. That benches and baskets should appear here, so that people can go for a walk or a bike ride. I'm convinced that the new park will be used by residents of many neighborhoods in Widzew, not just those in Janow, " explains the councilman.

first steps already taken

Lodz authorities have already taken the first steps to create the park. Specifically, the land closest to Rokicinska Street has been withdrawn from sale. It is a densely overgrown property that is a barrier from the busy street. Next, it will be necessary to revise plans for road construction, since it was in this area that a route was planned to reach as far as Przybyszewskiego Street.

In the third place, we will face an arduous analysis of all plots of land and probably buyouts. We are already after the preliminary analysis and have selected the most valuable areas with already overgrown trees. Others will always remain unplanted - they will serve as clearings, flower meadows and open areas, and this is because important mains belonging to the network operators, including the high-voltage network, run underground and above it, " explains Deputy Mayor Pustelnik.
