A Hubert Białk from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk created the work "Nobody's Interiors," about the revitalization of the courtyards of the Main City of Gdansk, which once played an important social role. Modern urban changes have made these places neglected and unused. The project, created under the supervision of Prof. Tadeusz Pietrzkiewicz and Daria Bolewicka, aims to bring these spaces back to life, creating meeting places that foster integration and cooperation.

space vs. sense of community

Courtyards and backyards in the historic center of Gdansk, especially in the Main City, are of great importance in the context of community building. In the past, they were places of daily gatherings of residents, which had utilitarian functions such as craft workshops, stores or common spaces. Over the years, as a result of urban development and changing needs, these spaces have been neglected and transformed into makeshift parking lots, trash sheds and spaces of minimal use.

Such neglect of public spaces has its consequences for the quality of life of residents and residents. Contemporary courtyards could once again become vibrant places. They should be spaces that enable meetings, cultural events and daily interactions, and contribute to strengthening human ties. Revitalization of these spaces could significantly improve the sense of community and contribute to reducing the problem of loneliness among residents.

cohousing

One of the latest trends in the design of common spaces is "cohousing." This concept is based on the sharing of space and shared responsibility for community life. Although the term most often refers to the construction of new housing estates, its principles fit perfectly with the idea of revitalizing courtyards in Gdansk, transforming them into semi-private, shared spaces that foster the integration of residents.

Cohousing is a form of habitation in which male and female residents choose to share spaces and resources while having access to private spaces.

In the context of Gdansk, courtyard spaces could serve as central meeting points shared by different social groups. According to the idea of cohousing, the most important element of a community space is the communal house, which is a place to meet, integrate and organize activities for the benefit of the community. In the Polish tradition, such facilities functioned as common rooms or folk houses, today called neighborhood houses. In line with this idea, courtyard spaces could be enriched with functions such as a playground, a meeting place, a work space or a greenhouse - all while maintaining adequate green space for spending time outdoors.

MY project

The WE project is a proposal aimed at revitalizing Gdansk's courtyards, transforming them into spaces full of life, providing a central meeting point. Its main idea is to create a "common house " - a space for cooperation and integration of different generations. The common spaces are aimed not only at holding meetings, but also at building human ties.

The proposed solution is an integrated courtyard with a number of common spaces, such as a playground, a meeting and work area, and a greenhouse. The whole is surrounded by greenery, creating the impression of a home garden, which encourages people to spend time in the courtyard, both alone and with others. This type of space could significantly improve the quality of life for residents and residents of Gdansk's Main Town, creating a place where a sense of community develops and social interaction is an integral part of everyday life.
