competition requirements
The challenge faced by the male and female students was to design residential and office buildings in Kraków on the site of the current market square, located between the Market Hall (design: Juliusz Dumnicki,1937-1940) and the railroad overpass at Grzegórzecka Street, together with a stop and reconstruction of the historic viaduct (realization 2023). An important element of the concept was to maintain the commercial function of the square (market square, book and antique exchange) as the dominant one, existing now and determining the identity of the place, to provide transport services for the complex, including parking spaces and service rooms in the underground garage. In addition, it was necessary to take into account the new functions and specifics of the space related to public transportation, which result from the construction of the railroad flyover and the location of its new stops near the square.
The official results of the competition will be announced during the autumn Fair of Homes and Apartments 2023 in Kraków, which will be held on November 18 and 19 this year.

The aim of the project is to create a complex that combines various functions such as residential, office, service and retail. An office building is located parallel to the hall, while the residential building is perpendicular. The building is equipped with four types of apartments: 1,2,3 and 4-bedroom units. The apartments are equipped with a loggia on the south side. The top two floors on the tower have a loggia on the west with a view of the old city. The space on the slab and under the slab has a service function. The slab has been transformed into a pocket park, which will help with the reduction of urban heat islands and overheating problems in buildings, according to the author's description by Joanna Mikołajec.
