Student idea for a Social and Cultural Center in Czarny Dunajec

17 of June '22

The {tag:studenci}, a graduate of the engineering studies in the field of architecture at the Podhalanska State Vocational University in Nowy Targ, proposed as part of his thesis a socio-cultural center that could be built in the area of the market square in Czarny Dunajec. The proposal, the author says, is an attempt to create a new meeting place and a symbol of the village.

The project was made as an engineering thesis under the direction of Prof. Marek Kowicki. The choice of the project's location was influenced by the terrain, scenic and compositional-landscape qualities.

Czarny Dunajec is a peculiar center between the Beskids, the Gorce Mountains and the Tatra Mountains. The town, due to its geographical location, is the center of western Podhale, which used to attract most of the residents of the Tatra foothills region. This aspect became the main reason for the design of the facility, which could contribute to the continued influx of nearby residents and the development of the village's tourism potential, says Karol Styrczula.

The plot chosen by the author is located at the junction of hiking trails and provides great views of the mountain ranges. The PPUZ graduate believes that the design of the socio-cultural center should follow modernity and be largely defined by the local community and seen as a symbol of the place, fitting into the compositional and spatial landscape.

A new cultural place in Czarny Dunajec

The lump of the building is meant to interest and attract people, and the functional designed interior is meant to encourage people to enter and return, the author explains.

The shape of the center allows contact between its users, and large glazings allow observation of cultural events even from a considerable distance, without entering the interior. The author hopes that thanks to this procedure, interested passers-by will want to visit the building in the future and take part in the cultural events organized there.

An important design element for the author was the color scheme of the building and the facade framed by geometric forms. The development of the area, according to the PPUZ graduate, fits into the urban tissue of Czarny Dunajec, creates a relationship with the surrounding nature and harmonizes with the scenic qualities by "extending" the market.

The site is intended to serve not only as an attraction for the local community, but to foster human relations and develop culture. I hope that thanks to the design activities and the inclusion in the context, I have created a recognizable project that raises the cultural and urban value of Czarny Dunajec," concludes Karol Styrczula.
