Love for the Polish capital is probably shared by every Varsovian. Grzegorz Piątek dedicated his latest book to it, "The Best City in the World. Warsaw in Reconstruction 1944-1949," and photographer Mariusz Zając made the 1930s capital colorful. Coloring old photos is not a novel practice, but the way the photographer did it is far different from previous attempts.
All thanks to technology! It's thanks to it that the photos don't look as artificial as they used to. Mariusz Zając, a native Varsovian and photographer, digitally remastered old black-and-whitevideo footage and photographs he found online. Artificial intelligence helped him achieve the effect. Among other things, the artist used DeOldify, a program that is still learning how to enhance photos, so there is no need to manually apply colors. He then refined the photographs in graphics applications - most of them look as if they were originally taken in color.
Pre-war Warsaw is, unfortunately, remembered by few people anymore. The film and photographs "colored" by Mariusz Zajac give an opportunity to visit the capital from 70 years ago. Such a trip to the past can arouse not only admiration, but also many emotions, especially among those who know its streets and buildings well.
