16 of November '21

A student of architecture at the Cracow University of Technology also took on this year's Monte d'Oiro Wine Hotel competition challenge {tag:studenci}. Her design for a hotel in a Portuguese vineyard setting was shortlisted for the project. Meet Peace and Wine, made of natural materials.

The competition to design a hotel in Portugal is the second project the Bee Breeders platform has organized in collaboration with Quinta do Monte D'Oiro, a family-owned vineyard located in the Lisbon region.

The task of the competition was to design a hotel part for the vineyard's existing infrastructure, along with adjacent ancillary functions. Among them, the organizers listed a restaurant, bar, outdoor and indoor pool, spa area, gym, modular meeting rooms, banquet space and underground garage, as well as a bridge connecting the various zones. The development area was divided into seven separate parts, and each had precise requirements for both functionality and maximum building height. We wrote about the detailed guidelines, as well as the composition of the jury , inRest, Try, See by Aneta Klementowska, Katarzyna Lech and Maja Pacek of the Wroclaw University of Technology, which was shortlisted for the project .

peace and wine

Joanna Zimna's proposal Peace and Wine was also recognized by the jury of the Bee Breeders competition, which placed it among the shortlisted projects.

The idea of the student from the Cracow University of Technology was to create a simple, but interesting, uniform form, fitting into the existing architectural fabric. The author also wanted to maintain harmony with the surrounding nature. She achieved this effect by designing a terraced building block sunk into the slope. She made its walls entirely of natural material - reinforced earth, thus giving a pleasant and warm character to the whole building.

Theterraces with irregular overhang, providing privacy for guests, were finished by the architect with glazing, directing the view from each hotel room to the beautiful landscape of grape fields. A similar effect was used in the restaurant as well as the banquet hall and recreational space, so that visiting guests can enjoy close contact with nature virtually everywhere.

hotel modules

The size of each hotel module was modeled on the width of the existing vineyard facilities, so the scale of the buildings is the same, and both the designed and already existing architecture work well together. In addition, the divisions relate directly to the vineyard beds, fusing what is natural with what is man-made," explains Joanna's scale.

The effect of merging with nature was enhanced with wooden pergolas fixed in the walls, along which vines will pile up, not only adding greenery to the establishment, but also shading and cooling the interiors. The author used similar pergolas on the utility terraces, giving the hotel a light and unique character.

The entire designed complex is located parallel to the existing vineyard buildings. The direction of the terraces is continued in the further part of the establishment - the simple mass of the banquet hall softens and organizes the architecture. Perpendicular to the main part of the establishment is a separate building with a swimming pool and offices. I fit into the whole, thanks to the similar scale of the buildings, and the use of the same reinforced earth and wooden accents. In front of the building is an outdoor pool, garden and children's area, as well as a beach volleyball court, which directly connects to the restaurant.

The hotel part and the restaurant have been connected by a covered bridge - connector, under which the main road connecting the square in front of the vineyard with the vines, as well as underground parking. The main entrance to the building is located at the square. From the lobby, visitors can access both hotel rooms and the restaurant and entertainment area, as well as the rooftop observation deck. An entrance to the swimming pool and spa area also leads from the square. The facilities have been adapted to the needs of people with disabilities, both through appropriate communication and by adapting some of the hotel rooms for wheelchair users.

Due to the seismic nature of the site, the author relied on a frame structure system, based on a grid of columns and beams, spaced every 4.5 meters. The system, is based on reinforced concrete footings, with rubber joints that, in the event of an earthquake, will prevent the building from collapsing. Feet with joints laid on a concrete isolation slab, allowing movement at the foundation level without disturbing the remaining tissue. The frame system was constructed of composite - fiberglass in a resin sheathing.
