Efficient materials in the construction of a house not only mean lower costs. By minimizing waste and choosing safe products, we take care of the environment. Being at the stage of laying a roof, it is worth knowing how to save money when choosing a roofing membrane without sacrificing high quality.
The roof membrane performs important functions - it protects the interior of the house from water, while at the same time draining moisture to the outside. Only a solid material will properly perform its function for up to several decades, while extending the life of the roof itself and adequately protecting the interior. So how to save money on such an important material?
The amount of membrane that is needed to fully cover the roof depends on how complex the shape of the roof is. The more planes, the more material is needed. The number of valleys, corners or chimneys should also be taken into account.
Nowadays we can choose from innovative products that are as efficient as possible, but also of high quality.
Delta Maxx Plus roof membrane
© Dörken Delta
An example of a new-generation roofing membrane is Delta Maxx Plus, which guarantees less material consumption due to minimal waste generation. The durable and highly tear-resistant membrane layer is unrolled parallel to the eaves and cut diagonally along the ridge. The cut section of the web can then be rotated 180 degrees and further processed in the opposite direction. The matched size avoids unnecessary waste of material. Work can continue with a diagonal cut. Double adhesive strips make it easy to rotate the roll while covering the roof, plus it is 100 percent windproof. Depending on the size of the roof, pitch and shape, the material savings compared to standard membranes is up to 30 percent. - says Mariusz Długosz, master roofer and Regional Sales Director at Dörken Delta.
For an 8×12 m envelope roof with a pitch of 45°, 168 m² of roof membrane is required as standard. Choosing the Delta Maxx Plus roof membrane requires 144 m², saving 14 percent (24 m²) of material.
Another example is a 5.5×5.5 m envelope roof with a pitch of 15°. It has a surface area of 32 m², and 49 m² of standard membrane is needed to cover it. With the Delta Maxx Plus membrane, only 33 m² of membrane is needed, resulting in a material savings of 32 percent (16 m²).
Work safety
Working on a roof not only means a high risk of serious injury to the roofer, but also the possibility of puncturing the membrane itself. The latest roofing membranes meet the most advanced safety standards.
It is worth noting whether the product has the appropriate approvals. The Delta Maxx Plus membrane has successfully passed stringent tests for puncture resistance (about 450/300 N/5 cm) and meets the stringent requirements of the GS-BAU 18 standard (as of 2015), as well as the regulations of the ZVDH (German Roofers' Association), advises Mariusz Długosz of Dörken Delta.
Delta Maxx Plus - a new generation membrane
Delta Maxx Plus is the first membrane with the ability to temporarily hold moisture that can serve as a pre-covering membrane. The special material at the bottom can absorb up to 1 l/m² of moisture, which is then gradually released. It also provides safe protection against insects, so chemical wood protection is no longer required (DIN 68800-2). In addition, Delta Maxx Plus is certified for energy efficiency, confirming savings in attic heating of up to 9 percent. This is due to the product's unique construction and 100 percent windproofing. A hugely important aspect is up to 25 years of manufacturer's warranty, which proves the durability of the product.
