Chapter IV
Conclusions.
Perhaps more interesting than the interplay between theory and architecture is the distance, tension and dialectic of interaction between the theoretical starting point and creative exploration.
Juhani Pallasmaa
The theoretical work is an attempt to understand how we perceive and how we as designers can interact with the viewer. Of particular importance to me are material considerations in the context of modern technologies. Both Juhani Pallasma and Steen Eiler Rasmussen emphasize in their concepts that they are not against computerization. However, they both remain advocates of realizing not only the opportunities offered by new media, but also the risks associated with them. Once again, I will emphasize that both "Perceiving Architecture" and "Eyes of the Skin" were published in the second half of the 20th century. Today, more than twenty years later, the theorists' doubts seem not to have lost their relevance. They do not concern only the way of working and preparing the project, but especially the materials.
I agree with the concepts cited in my work. The designer's task is also to anticipate the impact of what he creates not only in the present. In design work, the most important thing is the viewer. His needs have changed colossally over the centuries, but his body has remained constant. Juhani Pallasma recalls the words of Aulis Blomstedt, a well-known Finnish architect:
The ability to imagine life situations is a more important talent for an architect than the gift of imagining space29.
The knowledge of perception should be used in a design action, or more precisely, the action should consciously influence the viewer.
When discussing architecture, it should not be forgotten that we can also cite examples from other disciplines such as literature, painting, music, sculpture or dance. Each of them conveys a message about the current times. Perceiving the world only through the virtual world leads to the disappearance of the senses. The scale and quantity of architecture creation leads to a minimization of the duration of the design process.
The process of globalization makes architects execute their projects all over the world. The question arises as to how familiar they are with cultural contexts and local materials.
Analyzing the issue of the senses through the prism of Juhani Pallasma's words, I realized that the ability to perceive adequately involves sensitivity to the phenomena around us. Trying to name these phenomena will only be a secondary, subjective description. Knowledge of perception can make us aware of their existence, but it is no substitute for feeling and experiencing them personally.
