TheBydgoszcz local government is boasting the start of restoration work on the facade of another historic building in the city. This time it is a modernist edifice on January 20, 1920 Street. The refreshing of Bydgoszcz's townhouses is part of a larger urban planning project, which calls for the creation of a so-called garden city in the city.
The stately tenement, located on January 20, 1920 Street, whose facade will undergo restoration work, is an example of modernist architecture. It was erected in 1912-1913 based on a design by Georg Baesler. From the very beginning, the building served a residential function.
The tenement was built on a plan similar to the letter "T". Its characteristic element is a very original facade with different shapes. In the central part of the tenement with an elaborate entrance portal are two convex risalits, which may be associated with towers. In turn, at the height of the third floor there are small bay windows. Besides, the building also has balconies with brick balustrades. The façade is also decorated with cornices, a cartouche and a strip of stucco decoration over the windows of the last floors of the outermost parts of the tenement.

part of the urban planning project: city-garden
The planned work will mainly concern the building's facade. It is to be restored to resemble its original appearance. This is part of a larger urban planning project that involves the renovation of historic buildings, as well as work in open spaces, including the section between today's J. Kochanowski Park and Chodkiewicza Street. Bydgoszcz authorities plan to create a so-called garden city there, which, by the way, was already in the plans at the beginning of the district's creation. There are parks and squares in the area, which, according to the plan, are also to be renovated.
Bydgoszcz is gradually implementing its plan to refresh historic spaces. In the past year, several renovations of tenement buildings have begun. In August this year, the local government announced that renovation work on a tenement at the corner of Dworcowa and Sienkiewicza Streets was nearing completion, at a cost of nearly PLN 400,000. In the spring, preparations also began for the renovation of the tenement house at 15 Mazowiecka Street, which dates back to 1892.

Bydgoszcz can also boast of refreshed facades of all tenements along Adam Mickiewicz Avenue. The authorities managed to carry out the restoration work after 2000. In turn, in 2014-2015 an important revitalization of Jan Kochanowski Park. The modernization of the historic Polish Theater building will also begin soon, which we wrote more about here.
