Taking care of the space that surrounds us is currently our biggest challenge. In a time of building expansion, in a time of crises, especially climate crises, we should all pay special attention to the scale of resource use, respecting the context of existing buildings, landscape and nature. The notion of arbitrariness and self-determination of investors and architects should always be juxtaposed with the public good, space and the passage of time. Restraint and humility should balance the belief in unlimited possibilities for architecture to live up to its responsibility for the quality of our lives and environment. The continuing challenge is to design responsibly in the context of the continuing failure of legislation and administration to adapt to changing conditions and needs.
