An idea to revitalize Grójec. The project of a community center with an amphitheater

23 of June '22

Looking for ways to revitalize and make his hometown of Grójec more attractive, {tag:studenci} from the Warsaw University of Technology proposed a new community center along with an amphitheater. The premise is divided into three parts: a building, a concert area and grandstands, all surrounded by abundant greenery.

The presented engineering design was made under the direction of Dr. Piotr Trębacz.

I chose my hometown for the location of my work. After analyzing the opinions of the residents of Grójec, I pointed out two points that could be improved with a joint solution. One was the lack of a recreation area, such as a park or other open, friendly and attractive space. The other was the condition of the current community center and residents' expectations of it. So I proposed a community center with an amphitheater function," says the author.

Hubert chose an abandoned amphitheater as the site for his project, which could once again become a landmark of Grójec - a small town located near Warsaw.

Due to the small amount of green open spaces and public spaces in the city, there is a lack of space for organizing various types of events and concerts. Young people also complain about the lack of attractive places where they can sit with friends and spend some time in the open air or in some kind of eating establishment. There are very few buildings of architectural value in Grojec. The community center I propose, together with an open space with interesting landscaping, would to some extent respond to the problems described above," the Warsaw University of Technology graduate lists.

community center, concert plaza and grandstands

The project plot was divided by Hubert into three parts: the community center building, the concert square and the grandstand on the slope. In addition, the slope on the side of Poświętne Street was enriched with a strip of park greenery, creating a place where one can take shelter from the sun and relax on the grass. The designed body of the community center is positioned along Piotr Skargi Street. According to the author, such location of the building organizes the chaotic development along the street, giving it a linear character.

The community center consists of a tall main part and several smaller segments connected by a long glass corridor. The main part houses the glass entrance to the building, a high foyer and an auditorium. Two corridors diverge from the foyer, leading to different segments. One of them is a high gymnasium and dance hall. On the other side are smaller themed boxes: multimedia classes, painting and sculpture, music, and an office with a restaurant on the first floor - open to the park area.

opening wall and characteristic canopy

An interesting detail both functionally and structurally is the opening wall of the concert hall. This allows for the transformation of the back of the stage into an outdoor stage open to the square with an amphitheater.

Such a layout alludes to the historic layout where the Apple Blossom Festival was once held. Meanwhile, the body of the building received a characteristic canopy, which serves several functions. First, it hides the entrance area and the outdoor stage from the rain, secondly, it fulfills an aesthetic function, and thirdly, it partially masks the technical and photovoltaic installations placed on the roof, the author explains.

The main construction materials of the premise are CLT laminated wood and glass, thanks to which the massive body received some lightness. The glazing used reflects the numerous greenery and inscribes the community center into the surroundings.
