Warsaw is opening or building more nurseries in several neighborhoods at the same time. The city is betting on expanding the base of places in public facilities to relieve queues and allow children to be enrolled in facilities in the nearest neighborhood. Unfortunately, the formula chosen is design and build, which excludes architectural competitions.

The building of Warsaw's newest nursery has just been put into use. At 16 Pamiętna St. in Wilanów, six rooms with separate play and rest areas and bathrooms will be put at the children's disposal. Children will also be able to use the common areas - a movement room equipped with a dry pool with balls and a slide, mattresses, cushions and a play corner. The project on Pamiętna Street was implemented by the Wilanów District Office and is the second public facility of this type in this part of Warsaw - the first is at 8a St. Urszula Ledóchowska Street.

The investments currently underway are the result of, among other things, the 2019 decision to grant funding of PLN 45 million for the construction of six new nurseries. The facilities are being built in Białołęka, Wola, Włochy and Targówek. As the city authorities announced then, A total of 36 nurseries will be built throughout the term.

Among others, a nursery school on Astronautów Street in Włochy is being built under the design and build formula. The contractor, the Wegner company, is erecting the building in a modular system. It will accommodate six wards for 150 children. Each ward will consist of an activity room, a sanitary room adjacent to the ward room and a storage room. A playground will also be designed on the nursery grounds. The project includes zoning the square according to the age of the children: 1-2 years and 2-3 years. The cost of construction is nearly PLN 7.5 million.

A contractor has just been selected, who, after signing the contract, will have 18 months to design and build a six-unit facility with, among other things, two modern playgrounds at 2/4 Ludwiki Street in Wola. As in Wlochy, here too the construction is to be modular, manufactured off-site and assembled on site. Thanks to the use of prefabricated elements, the contractor is able to design and erect the entire building at an express pace - in 1.5 years. The contract is to be signed with a consortium consisting of two companies - F.B. Ekoinbud Ltd. and Ekoinbud Ltd.

Unfortunately, the new facilities do not benefit from the experience of the award-winning building located in Wesola. In 2017, the authorities of this Warsaw district announced an architectural competition for the design of a nursery school. The winning design was xystudio, which dominated the 6th edition of the Architectural Award of the President of Warsaw. The facility received awards in the best public building category, the Grand Prix of the entire competition and the audience award. It is a small and architecturally restrained building, which was built on a densely wooded plot in a green part of the city.
The example of the nursery in Wesola shows that an architectural competition can also result in modest yet outstanding architecture. It is a pity that the city does not take advantage of this experience when building other facilities. One exception is the
