Wenzhou Medical University
International Exchange Center,
design: Atelier FCJZ
The Wenzhou Medical University International Exchange Center, designed by Atelier FCJZ, redefines contemporary approaches to campus design by harmoniously combining architecture with nature and taking into account local climatic conditions. Located in China's Zhejiang Province, the 38,770-square-meter complex responds to users' needs while entering into dialogue with the surrounding natural environment.

climate-inspired design
The triangular plot of the complex is surrounded by lush vegetation, which provides a natural backdrop for the entire facility. Dense treetops served as the starting point for the center's concept .

The project was designed to promote outdoor living and activity. The climate of the place became the basis for the concept of the International Exchange Center of Wenzhou Medical University
- say the architects.

division of space
into eight integrated buildings
In order to emphasize the integration of the architecture with the surroundings, it was decided to divide the functional program of the center into eight four-story buildings. Each building was designed with a specific purpose in mind: four buildings serve a residential function (dormitories), while the others are an activity center, a library, a teaching building and a lecture hall.

seamless connection between interior and exterior
In the central part of the center is a courtyard surrounded by an air-conditioned zone, a veranda and a space under the eaves. The two outer layers act as transition zones that seamlessly connect the building's interior with the surrounding environment.

integration of chinese eaves
in a modern complex
The buildings' roofs follow the traditional eaves characteristic of Chinese wooden architecture. By aligning all the eaves in one plane, a continuous, unified and compact structure of the entire complex was created.

The only gaps in it are three large courtyards - two surrounded by buildings on all sides and one open on three sides - and 50-centimeter gaps between individual buildings with smaller courtyards.

flexible spaces for learning
and public events
Students and faculty can use the spaces for study, communication and other activities, regardless of weather conditions. Overhanging eaves between the two building segments create an open hall that can be used for public events such as concerts and sports activities.

During the design stage, we benefited from the expertise of ophthalmologists from Wenzhou Medical University, who emphasized the visual health benefits of being in natural light under the treetops or canopies.
