Kolumna (Lodz province) is the town where I grew up and lived for twenty years. It occupies a place in my heart that no other city can occupy, which is why I chose it for my design endeavors. But it's not just sentiment, I also wanted to pay her due respect and repay her for all those years when the shade of the pine trees there gave me respite from the sun.

The design challenge I have undertaken involves the adaptation of a 1930s summer house into a year-round single-family home, and my main goal is to draw attention to the problem of deteriorating architecture. I believe that it should be nurtured, especially if it is strongly connected to the history of a place. This is the case with the Column, which was created thanks to the buildings and their recreational use. The houses here are nestled amidst the rustle of pine trees, which gives both great freedom and endearing privacy. The Column is a combination of space and place, and a person's life is a constant movement between safe haven and adventure, attachment and freedom.

When designating specific rooms and passageways, I was keen to ensure that the space in the house was practical, aesthetically pleasing and took advantage of the potential of natural light and the warmth it brings into the rooms. I wanted as many perforations as possible in the walls and ceilings inside the house, so that light could freely reach every room in the house. I replaced most of the walls with glass panels. This was a procedure inspired by the Tugendhat villa designed by Mies van der Rohe, a glass house in which trees and turf formed the visual boundary.

Light, as an intrinsic element of architecture, in my conception helps to build emotions, bring out shapes and highlight the features of the materials used. Natural light penetrating the rooms has been used to maintain a connection with the outside world and avoid the impression of tight confinement. Transparencies take advantage of the phenomena of fading, reflection and refraction, so that the objects merge with their surroundings and do not compete with the existing context. Instead, the window-filled walls create images teeming with life and color.

The design was strongly influenced by Mondrian's work

My work was strongly influenced by Mondrian's work, which became the starting point for the window muntin divisions, as well as for the bedroom furniture I designed. According to the De Stijl group, in architecture the equivalent of color was material, and non-color: empty space. The interiors were designed with three main materials: concrete, wood and glass. With the empty space, on the other hand, I wanted to give the house in Column a lightness and fluidity. The first floor is a vast majority of open space divided by a load-bearing wall along the center axis of the house. The first floor was devoted entirely to door-closed bedrooms and a bathroom. The interior walls are decorated with paintings by Anna Piechura and Mark Rothko.

The project aims to create a home in Kolumna that willingly welcomes both restriction and freedom. A place that will simultaneously become a cozy environment where one can strengthen friendships or reflect in solitude, as well as an open space that encourages action.
