Terraced housing in Luxembourg from DA Dziuba Architects

17 of August '20

A semi-detached terraced house is being built on the outskirts of the Luxembourg town of Machtum, located near the German border. Poles from DA Dziuba Archtekci studio are responsible for the project, which consists of three simple, cuboidal blocks.

The project, designed by Julia Kucharska-Dziuba, Karol Dziuba, Jerzy Dziuba and Bożenna Kosińska, consists of three, four-story semi-detached buildings, creating six large residential units. The plot for the project is located in the eastern part of Luxembourg, amid picturesque vineyards with an exposed view of the Moselle River winding through the valley.

As the architects say about the massing:

Thelayout of the masses was dictated primarily by the sloping terrain towards the meandering bends of the Moselle River and the desire to open up to the picturesque cadres of the river with its numerous vineyards. The shaping of the blocks was significantly influenced by the local plan, which strictly determined not only the location of the buildings and their height to the ridge, but also such details as the maximum ordinates of the front and rear parapets, the ordinate of the ceiling above the first floor or the maximum depth of the garage floor - of course, for each plot separately.

Since the provisions regarding the ordinate of the front parapet, according to the architects, were not favorable, they abandoned the two-slope layout in favor of a single slope with the ridge at the front of the plot. Such a solution additionally allowed the effective use of the southern roof slope for photovoltaic panels, which, together with large glazing on the north side, increased the energy efficiency of the buildings.

Each of the designed buildings consists of a ground floor accessible from the street level with access to the garage and elevator. The main entrance with a living area is located on level +1, while a bedroom area is provided on level +2. The last floor is a recreational space with a large terrace with a panoramic view of the Moselle valley. All floors in each building are served by elevators, thus each residential unit is accessible to people with disabilities. In the design of the facades, the authors mainly used two materials - Prodema wooden panels and Alucobond matte composite panels in black. Large glazings with high-energy triple-glazed sets are also characteristic.
