Szczecin City Hall has announced a competition for the position of City Architect - what criteria must be met to apply for the position?
From 2014 to 2021, the Architect of the City of Szczecin was Jaroslaw Bodnar, during whose term of office work was carried out, among other things, on the new arrangement of Szczecin's Wojska Polskiego Avenue. Since his sudden death, the position has remained vacant, although the Szczecin branch of the SARP has sought to restore the position, and a discussion on the role of the City Architect was one of the main themes of this year's Westival in Szczecin.
The tasks that await the City Architect of Szczecin
It looks like Szczecin will live to see a City Architect, as on October 17 a vacancy announcement for the position appeared in the Public Information Bulletin.
The City Architect will be at the same time deputy director of the Department of Architecture and Construction in the city office. His tasks will include:
- conducting urban planning matters, supervision of the BPPM including:
cooperation with BPPM,
cooperation with MKUA,
participation in the process of updating the City's spatial policy; - carrying out activities aimed at improving the quality of spatial solutions;
- conducting activities to preserve and improve the aesthetic, artistic and utilitarian qualities of the City;
- Cooperation with departments and organizational units in the preparation and implementation of city investments;
- Cooperation with departments and organizational units in the development and negotiation of architectural and spatial requirements for significant investments in the city space planned or implemented by private investors;
- Cooperation with organizations and associations of architects and urban planners;
- Initiating and organizing architectural and urban-architectural competitions;
- Participation in debates, professional conferences related to urban and architectural planning in the city.

To be eligible for this position, a university degree (major: architecture, urban planning), at least 5 years of work experience or running a business for at least 3 years, knowledge of the law (listed in detail in the announcement), proficiency in Word, Lex, Polish citizenship, full legal capacity and the exercise of full public rights are required. The candidate must not have been convicted by a final court sentence for an intentional crime prosecuted by public indictment or an intentional fiscal crime, and should instead enjoy a good reputation.
As additional requirements are indicated: postgraduate studies in the field of spatial management, experience in public administration, entry and active membership in the list of the professional self-government of architects, knowledge of software related to the architectural profession (CAD, graphics), knowledge of English and German, knowledge of issues related to thehistory of architecture and urban development of Szczecin, responsibility, conscientiousness, high personal culture, creativity, availability, activity, organizational sense, ability to manage a team, ability to work under time pressure and ability to cope with stress.
