Young architects for the reconstruction of Ukraine

15 of May '23

Article from A&B issue 04|2023

Although the war in Ukraine is still wreaking havoc, Ukrainian architects have already begun seeking solutions for the country's future reconstruction. Architectural universities are supporting the local governments of municipalities that have either suffered destruction or received an influx of displaced people by developing design proposals for both entire urban settings and individual buildings. To this end, they establish contacts with Polish universities, including the Warsaw University of Technology.

Aleksander Baranowski

Alexander Baranovski Born in 1962 in Kiev, where he graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1985. In 1988 he completed his doctoral studies. He worked as an architect at Kiew ZNDIEP and at FS&P Arcus office in Warsaw. He was a producer of the television program Dom i Wnętrze, and director of the Office of the Poznań Fair in Kiev. He is currently a project coordinator at the National Association of Architects of Ukraine.

The project for the reconstruction of the destroyed Ukrainian city of Makary under the name ReCity was developed at the request of the chairman of the city municipality and with the support of the National Association of Architects of Ukraine. It is to be the basis for further design and consequent reconstruction of the destruction by the Rebuild Our Ukraine Foundation, which plans to create a house factory.

On an area of more than 100 hectares, a complex of integrated mid-rise residential and public utility complexes with covered parking lots and adjacent land, a school for four hundred students, three shopping centers, a technology park, a cultural and entertainment zone with a military-historical museum was designed, and a university and a cultural and arts center were also developed to serve the entire city in the future. The project area is surrounded by a landscaped waterfront with sacred, sports and recreational spaces. Students Valentina Yemelyanova, Darya Zub, Tetyana Sydorchuk, Alina Shershunovych, Kateryna Korobko, Artem Sydorenko, Valery Myronenko and PhD student Ruslan Pustovoit participated in the development of the project.
The theme of construction for post-war Ukraine was also taken up by lecturers and students of the Faculty of Architecture at the Warsaw University of Technology.

The Reconstruction Team for Ukraine, established at the department and headed by Prof. Anna Maria Wierzbicka and comprising Dr. Pawel Trębacz, Dr. Renata Jóźwik and Magdalena Duda, has begun activities focusing on developing design standards for the residential environment in areas displaced and rebuilt from war damage. The team is conducting scientific and design research in this regard under the EIT Community New European Bauhaus—Modular Refugee Settlement Project (ProModSe) grant. From the Ukrainian side, Dr. Yuriy Kryvoruchko and Dr. Olha Kryvoruchko of Lviv Polytechnic National University participated in the project. The team aims to implement a modular construction project for the internal refugee community in Ukraine. The project reflects the three core values of the New Bauhaus: sustainability, aesthetics derived from the utilitarian simplicity of the solutions, and the integration of individuals and families within the newly emerging communities of residents. The Lviv City Council has allocated a seven-hectare plot of land in the northern part of the city for the project. Polish modular home manufacturer Unihouse is to become the contractor-partner.

The issue was developed at three scales. At the micro scale, a systematic modular segment design was prepared for a family with different numbers of members, at the mezzo scale, variant segment combinations were developed in the form of development quarters, and at the macro scale, the project encompassed a housing complex designed for more than three thousand residents formed by means of the aforementioned quarters (with a population density of about five hundred people per hectare, about 2,000 square meters for plots for local centers). An important element of the measures is to ensure an appropriate standard of habitation at each of the three scales, so both the segments and the quarter layout were developed with appropriate size parameters.

The subject of the student part of the assignment was to develop a conceptual design of the aforementioned local center with socio-cultural and commercial functions for a new modular housing development. The projects were part of a specialization in the master's degree program at WA PW—A3—Architecture of Technology and Structure—Context and Meaning, headed by Prof. Wierzbicka. An integral part of the assignment was the development of a design for the center area, along with the architecture of the urban interior walls in the surrounding public space. The series included design classes, a seminar and lectures. Students from the Department of Architectural and Urban Design at WA PW, under the supervision of architects Jakub Pieńkowski and Filip Strzelecki and experts Dr. Paweł Trębacz and Prof. Anna Maria Wierzbicka, worked on the concept of two buildings. The first was to be associated with services of a social nature (kindergarten + playground/skwer), the second with services of a commercial nature (crafts and bazaar trade area).

The students analyzed the needs of the neighborhood's residents. They paid particular attention to the social problems of resettlement, which result in the emergence of new needs (shelters, the issue of security, the upbringing of a new generation in conditions of separation from home) or the intensification of hitherto overlooked ones (flexibility of housing solutions, aesthetics of the facades forming the frontage of public spaces), as well as social relations and their spatial and communication conditions.

The works made by Polish and Ukrainian students were presented to the public during the 4 Design Days festival in Katowice in January 2023. Working on similar themes initiated an exchange of experience and will surely find continuation in the future in the form of cooperation between young architects.
