descriptionOn October 28, 2024, we learned the results of, yet another, the 25th edition of the Concrete Architecture competition - an academic award for the best thesis using concrete.
The annual competition is made possible by the cooperation of the Faculty of Architecture at the Cracow University of Technology and the Association of Cement Manufacturers.
The idea for the competition on concrete architecture, initiated in 2000, arose, the organizers write, from the need to draw the attention of graduate students to the qualities of concrete as a building material that plays an important role in shaping architecture. The project was initiated by Professor Dariusz Kozlowski, long-time dean of the Faculty of Architecture and winner of the 2011 SARP Honorary Award.
The competition was open to submissions of thesis by authors who obtained the Master of Science in Architecture degree from a Polish university in a given academic year. According to the regulations, the architectural values of the projects were evaluated, with a special emphasis on the aesthetic and structural qualities of concrete.
The theses were evaluated by a jury consisting of:
- Prof. Magdalena Kozień-Woźniak - dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the Cracow University of Technology, chairman of the jury,
- dr. hab. Tatiana Misijuk, prof. PB - dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the Białystok University of Technology
- dr. hab. Agata Gawlak, prof. PP - dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Poznan University of Technology,
- dr. hab. Tadeusz Bradecki, prof. PŚ - dean of the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology,
- Prof. Tomasz Kozłowski - commissioner of the competition,
- Zbigniew Pilch - director of marketing and public affairs of the Association of Cement Manufacturers.
Out of 29 submitted works from 8 Faculties of Architecture, the jury nominated 17. Four equal honorable mentions and three equal main prizes were awarded. The main awards went to: Mateusz Kołacz from the Faculty of Architecture at the Cracow University of Technology, Sandra Chodura from the Faculty of Architecture at the Silesian University of Technology and Weronika Prokopiuk from the Faculty of Architecture at the Bialystok University of Technology. The awarded works were designed by: Kamila Przytula from the Faculty of Architecture at the Cracow University of Technology, Paweł Białas from the Faculty of Architecture at the Silesian University of Technology, Barbara Pater from the Faculty of Architecture at the Wrocław University of Technology, and Przemysław Dybas and Wiktoria Jankowska from the Faculty of Construction, Environmental Engineering and Architecture at the Rzeszów University of Technology.
