Krakow University of Technology will educate in Ukrainian language

08 of June '22

Two new majors have been created at Krakow University of Technology. Their unique character lies in the fact that they have been adapted for Ukrainian students. What is their goal? To create human resources to rebuild Ukraine after the war.

studying in Ukrainian

The Department of Civil Engineering has begun recruiting students to study Construction and Transportation in Ukrainian. Normally, studies at the Cracow University of Technology begin with a one-year preparatory course at the International Training Center of the Cracow University of Technology. In this case it is different.

The study will have a formula unprecedented in the Polish higher education system. In the first semester, classes will be conducted entirely in Ukrainian, in the second semester in Ukrainian and Polish. From the third semester onward, most of the classes could already be conducted in Polish, with elements of classes in Ukrainian if needed. The idea is to help Ukrainian candidates overcome the language barrier, among other things. Students from Ukraine would learn engineering subjects and the Polish language at the same time. The language barrier would not be an obstacle to studying in Poland and would not delay the key moment, that is, the start of strictly engineering education. We are proposing to study construction and transportation, strategic for Ukraine, in an extraordinary formula, because the circumstances are exceptional," says the dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Cracow University of Technology, Professor Andrzej Szarata.

Importantly, the number of places for Ukrainian-language studies will not reduce the number of places for Polish candidates. The number of places for studies next academic year is similar to that of last year, and the main round of recruitment has just begun.

Candidates for Construction and Transportation majors taught in Ukrainian and Polish should have a ZNO matriculation. If the candidate does not have the ZNO (Independent External Test - a certificate of full secondary education in Ukraine) document with him, he should print out his ZNO matriculation results from the exam website. When this is not possible (this scenario applies, for example, to Ukrainian citizens who crossed the border of the Republic of Poland after February 24, 2022), a high school diploma will be required. Ukrainian candidates who will not have a high school diploma, but only a high school diploma, must pass the entrance exam in mathematics. The entrance exam is scheduled for July 11, 2022.

Ukrainian students will also benefit from a package of additional classes - remedial classes in math and chemistry, or those devoted to Ukrainian construction standards. As a result, they will graduate with a European engineering degree and with competencies and knowledge profiled for Ukraine as well," explains Vitalii Naumov, PhD, a professor at the Cracow University of Technology's Faculty of Civil Engineering.

Krakow University of Technology as a forge of human resources for the future of Ukraine

Krakow Technical University is beginning to train future Ukrainian specialists who will lift the country from the ruins of war. Young skilled personnel will be needed when the criminal warfare is stopped. Direct education in Ukrainian and then in Polish will also allow them to find their way in our labor market, or in Polish companies that will work in Ukraine.

More information (in Polish and Ukrainian) can be found on the Civil Engineering Faculty website(see here).
