"Naturia is a place where architecture intertwines with nature." Design by Kurylowicz & Associates

12 of March '21

In one of Toruń's housing estates, north of the city center, "Naturia" - a complex of residential buildings designed by Kurylowicz & Associates studio - is being built. The area where the premise is being built, according to the current Urban Development Plan, is to be expanded with an additional functional plan and public spaces connected to the center of Toruń.

When designing the layout of this establishment, the priority for both the architects and the investor was to maintain the forest character of the plot and preserve as many existing trees as possible.

"Naturia is a place where architecture intertwines with nature, bowing to the trees and giving residents a sense of harmony and peace," says Maria Saloni-Sadowska, Project Manager from Kurylowicz & Associates.

The project includes thirteen low-rise residential buildings - some of them will form a compact frontage development along the Jar estate's main thoroughfares, while the remaining nine buildings, located deep within the plot, are designed as free-standing, freely scattered blocks with intimate green spaces in between. The entire development will be off-limits to automobile traffic, with underground parking planned to preserve existing trees.

The completed first phase of the establishment includes three free-standing buildings. The small scale of the development, the space set aside between the buildings and the greenery surrounding the architecture have a chance to create a resident-friendly estate. The uniform forms of the buildings, proposed by architects from Kurylowicz & Associates studio, are maintained in neutral colors - light gray facades are juxtaposed with cladding and partitions made of vertical laths of light wood. The simple masses will be differentiated by the finish of the facades - some of the buildings have been designed with plaster cladding, while others have been designed with brick cladding with clinker tiles, referring to local architectural traditions.

The relationship of man to nature and then architecture to the landscape is constantly being renewed. Architecture built in a natural landscape is a poetic exploration that ultimately reveals a new perspective on design, adds Professor Ewa Kuryłowicz of Kuryłowicz & Associates.
