Innovation center for high-performance medical devices,
design: HENN
Studio project HENN - Innovation Center for High-Performance Medical Devices - is located in the heart of Guangzhou's booming bio-island, an international zone dedicated to biomedical research and high-tech. The building is designed to support the development of advanced medical devices, which required a concept that combines laboratory and research spaces with areas conducive to free communication and open offices.

X-shaped plan
- optimal use of space
HENN's design is based on an X-shaped plan, which allowed maximum utilization of the square plot of land.

natural light
and thoughtful composition of spaces
The floor plan and glazed elevations ensure that daylight enters the central part of the building, while offering views of the surrounding landscape from all sides. The inner corners of the plan are rounded, which contrasts with the sharp outer edges, adding aesthetic value to the building and giving the elevations a dynamic feel.
Three-tier structure with roof terraces
The center's vertical layout consists of three superimposed multi-story blocks, separated by terraces with greenery. The individual blocks, of varying heights, are supported by powerful columns.

variety of functions on different levels
The lowest block houses public spaces, including a lobby, an exhibition hall, a demonstration laboratory and a cafeteria. The middle floor is dedicated to laboratories, meeting rooms and multifunctional spaces, while the top floor is occupied by offices. The laboratory areas have numerous columns and the walls are decorated with white fins, while the office wings have a more open structure.

new typology of vertical architecture
- innovation space
The Innovation Center introduces a new typology of vertical architecture, combining experimental and research spaces with co-working spaces. The HENN project provides a kind of "scaffolding" for innovation, supporting the development of advanced medical devices.
