According to the Regulation of the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration of 07.06.2010 on fire protection of buildings, other buildings and grounds, all fire protection equipment should be subjected to technical inspections and maintenance activities at least once a year and must meet the requirements of Polish standards.
Evacuation lighting plays a key role in ensuring the safety of building occupants in emergency situations such as fires or power failures. There are a number of standards and regulations for emergency lighting, which specify technical parameters and requirements for installation, operation and maintenance. Regular inspections and tests can detect possible faults, preventing them from occurring at the time of an emergency. Their owners are responsible for this (art.1 of the Act of May 6, 2005 amending the Law on Fire Protection - Journal of Laws No. 100, item 835 of June 8, 2005). Unfortunately, very often the users of facilities equipped with fire protection equipment have no knowledge of the need for maintenance until the authorities of the State Fire Service carry out the first inspection.

Not just inspections - other responsibilities
In order to avoid problems in the event of an emergency, it is not enough to limit oneself only to performing mandatory inspections and maintenance once a year. Appropriate instructions and procedures for the operation of fire protection equipment must be developed and implemented in the facility. Tasks involving supervision of the condition of fire protection equipment in the facility should be assigned to the Fire Protection Inspector or another competent employee, such as the Technical Service Manager.
What are the responsibilities of the Technical Service Manager of the facility?
- If using an automatic testing device, the information should be recorded monthly'
- In the case of other systems, tests with the recording of the results should be performed:
- daily in the case of central power systems, visually check the indicator of proper operation
- monthly - turn on in emergency operation mode each luminaire and each internally illuminated escape sign, by simulating the failure of the power supply to the basic lighting, for a period of time sufficient to check that each luminaire lights up. During this time, check the proper operation of all emergency lighting fixtures and illuminated signs.
- Annual - perform the same test as monthly and also a full-term test, for which a professional company should be hired. - Supervise the timely fulfillment of duties by the employees of the technical service and fire protection equipment service companies. Track the schedule and analyze the results of the inspections carried out.
- The facility should maintain a "Logbook", available for inspection by any authorized person, in which reports of inspections of emergency lighting are recorded. The logbook should be accompanied by a design for the layout of evacuation lighting fixtures.

Annual inspection in accordance with the Decree of the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration dated 07.06.2010
Maintenance activities and annual inspections should be entrusted only to specialists. The experience of service personnel should be very important when choosing a company. Conducting a review of emergency lighting requires specialized knowledge and appropriate authorizations.First of all, the company should conduct a general verification of the compliance of the design and configuration with the assumptions, including a walk-through of the entire facility, verification of the correctness of signage, identification of deficiencies in lighting and mechanical damage to luminaires. In addition, the correctness of the operation of the system is checked, efficiency tests are performed, the logbook of the aforementioned lighting and entries in it are controlled (requirements of Standard PNEN-50172:2005).
When it comes to safety, there is no room for compromise. The best solution will be to hire a professional company to carry out the inspection, which combines years of experience with modern diagnostic technologies, and has a team of qualified specialists who will not only carry out the inspection thoroughly, but also advise on the modernization and optimization of systems. It is very important that the company conducting the inspection provides full documentation in accordance with current standards and regulations, which is essential when inspecting supervisory instututions.
