abstract
The work contains an analysis of various methods of conservation of historic walls of defensive architecture, most of which are preserved in a state of permanent ruin, as "witnesses of history". To a large extent, these are dilapidated and crumbling objects, which have been secured, undergone reconstruction, rebuilding or adaptation to a new function. The work includes an analysis of architectural solutions, in the context of various
methods of historic preservation and the guidelines of major conservation treaties. The research method adopted is a critical analysis, which includes adaptations of ruins in terms of function, demand, social impact, cultural context, and undertaking to determine the best method of preserving a "permanent ruin" on the basis of realizations in Poland and around the world.
