In the exhibition "1.90 m" the artist presents furniture-sculptures tailored to his height. He fills the space of the Project Room at the Center for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle with them. Measuring almost 2 meters, Jan Baszak reflects on space and how it is experienced, as well as, among other things, on the concept of realism in sculpture and the need to redefine it.
White, soft, elegant velour wraps the sculptures with which Jan Baszak furnishes the space of the Project Room at the Center for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle. The artist is trying to make himself comfortable here and be a host at the same time. At first glance, his armchair sculptures resemble islands in shopping malls, which are meant to give a substitute for privacy in public space, but are at the same time mismatched and too universal to satisfy individual needs for intimacy and comfort. Jan Baszak's sculptures, however, are not meant to be sat on, and the artist adapts them to his dimensions. What if everything was three centimeters taller? In the "1.90 m" project, Jan Baszak talks about finding himself in space and feeling the proportions, but also about the role of the sculptor and the need to redefine the notion of realism and figuration in sculpture.
