Dominik Darasz - briefly on the subject

31 of October '19

The November issue of A&B is edited by Horizone Studio. For those who still can't get enough of their commitment to promoting green and smart architecture, we have good news! Today, Dominik Darasz, one of the partners at Horizone Studio, will answer our questions in Thursday's mini-conversation series "10 Questions to... ", and you can visit the studio itself during the upcoming FOPA Open Architecture Studio Festival.

Dominik Darasz, a graduate of the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning at the Cracow University of Technology. In 2003-2005 he worked at the Architecture Department of the Helsingborg City Council in Sweden where he was responsible for urban planning projects in Mariastaden. In Sweden, he also founded the architecture studio DKD Perspektiv, and in 2009, together with partners, he opened the Horizone Studio office in Krakow.

1. architecture in three words...?

a. Sustainable.
b. Humanitarian.
c. Timeless.

2. The three most important buildings to you...?

a. My aunt's vacation home... childhood memories, first tree houses, building lightweight wooden structures and great fun.
b. Tverrfjellhytta, Norwegian Wild Reindeer Pavilion, proj.: Snøhetta.
c. Farnsworth House or Glass House, proj.: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

3. most important book on architecture...?

Hmmm... I rather prefer to study historical and contemporary maps of cities, analyze old and modern urban planning.

4. most inspiring city and why...?

There are a lot of inspiring cities, it's hard to choose one most inspiring....

5. architect with whom you would like to design something and why...?

Santiago Calatrava - bridges, connections, these structures have always fascinated me, and he has perfected them. Juxtaposed with our local "bridge crossings", this is a different class.

6. hand-drawing or computer drawing?

Hand-drawing I have been associated with since my pre-school years, when I used it to visualize my first ideas.

7. mockup or 3D model?

Definitely a mockup, an invaluable working tool, best explaining our ideas to the audience.

8. modernism or postmodernism?

Modernism, in fact, "less is more."

9. working after hours or sports?

Sports, and as often as possible, allows you not to go crazy in this construction world.

10. architecture or business?

Architectural business - in my opinion, there is not one without the other, design without money in isolation from cost realities is pointless... purely ideological.

The opportunity to get a sneak peek at how the architects at Horizone Studio work will be during the Open Architecture Studio Festival, November 22 at 5 p.m. See you there!
