Karpiel Steindel Architecture studio has designed a complex of wooden houses in Zakopane. The Boats from the north do not stand out against the background of the mountain landscape, while from the south, thanks to huge glazing, they open up to the panorama of the Tatra Mountains.
The new development by Karpiel Steindel Architecture is a complex of houses consisting of a main building and two smaller bungalows for guests. The architects wanted the building, located on the mountainside, to blend in with the surroundings. Thanks to the use of black stained drapes - aged wood - the houses are reminiscent of mountain chalets.

Boathouses on the mountainside
Bright larch wood distinguishes the underbellies of the houses from the black draperies, evoking the hulls of boats, hence the name The Boats. The monolithic nature of the facade enhanced by the monochromatic color scheme is accentuated by buried door and garage openings.

An optical break in the mass of the main building is introduced by a glazed connector between the garage and the main part of the development. The offset of the roof from the building axis shortens the eaves on the north and lengthens them on the south, thus creating a natural canopy for the terrace.
