Pixel, design: MVRDV
Pixel, designed by Dutch architectural firm {tag:Pracownie}, is a modern residential development in the United Arab Emirates comprising 525 apartments and retail, office and common spaces. It is the first completed development in Makers District, a dynamic new neighborhood on Reem Island, which developer IMKAN describes as "the new heart of Abu Dhabi." Makers District is intended to be a creative counterpart to nearby Saadiyat Island, the city's cultural center.

spatial layout and central plaza
A key element of the project is the central plaza, surrounded by seven skyscrapers. Their varying heights have been designed to provide shade, improve circulation of cool winds, and allow panoramic views of the waterfront and beach surrounding the project site. The first floors of the buildings will be filled with food and retail establishments, while the upper floors will house communal spaces such as a gym, medical clinic, nursery and offices for start-ups. As a result, the complex will remain active throughout the day, with the plaza acting as a vibrant social center.

facades and public spaces
Pixel is distinctive in its architecture - the facades of the buildings, in subtle pastel shades, are fitted with sunshades. At the base, the skyscrapers "break up" into pixel-like structures, creating terraces and bay windows that seamlessly extend the residential spaces to the outside. The designed plaza has been enriched with vegetation, fountains and pools, improving the microclimate and enhancing outdoor comfort. Green roofs planned for the upper floors will further support this function.

materials inspired by local heritage
The Pixel project draws on Abu Dhabi's cultural heritage, referencing the tradition of pearl fishing, which has been a cornerstone of the city's economy for centuries. The exterior facades are made of concrete panels with textures inspired by shells and designed by artist Nicole Martens. Pastel tiles on the central plaza resemble the inside of a pearl, giving the space a cohesive and distinctive look. Each tower was given an original color scheme, which not only emphasizes the individuality of the buildings, but also makes orientation easier, especially in the underground parking garage.

housing for everyone
- diversity and accessibility
Pixel has 525 apartments planned, ranging from compact studios to spacious three-bedroom apartments. The apartment layouts have been designed with diversity in mind, combining luxury units with more affordable ones. Thanks to the lively atmosphere of the central plaza, apartments on the lower floors are just as attractive as those on the upper floors.

At Pixel, we wanted to challenge the standard residential development typologies that have become the norm in the United Arab Emirates. Instead of anonymous, isolated skyscrapers, we offer an inclusive space - the opportunity to spend time outdoors, form relationships with neighbors or invite guests for a meal at a restaurant in the square. It's a way of life that is not only enjoyable, but also more socially and environmentally sustainable," says Jacob van Rijs, co-founder of MVRDV.
The complex promotes the integration of residents from different backgrounds - local Abu Dhabi residents, expats, families, singles, young and old.
