In our #Mlodzipolscyarchitekci series, we ask questions to young architects about the problems and conditions facing young people after graduation.
Entitlements - why are young architects reluctant to obtain them?
Young architects are eager to acquire entitlements when they see that they will have a chance to use them and that it will bring direct benefit. In most cases, however, other people are responsible for the projects, and the decision to take the exam is postponed. We feel that studio leaders should encourage employees to become certified. The learning process itself allows to organize formal and legal knowledge, which facilitates daily work.

Conditions for practicing the profession for the young
Architects who have just graduated face different realities, while young studios face different challenges. Studies do not always prepare well for the profession, so additional activity is very important, which shows not only the skills, but also the commitment of the person. A good portfolio will make it easier to get into an office, which will allow you to work on interesting topics and develop. In our opinion, Poland lacks medium-sized offices with high standards of work, which would implement people after graduation into the practice of architecture.
Young studios are often treated by default as inexperienced, unreliable. Thus, the investor or ordering party approaches cooperation with such an office with some reserve. And yet, taking into account the definition of a "young studio", there may be even several years of experience behind it of the leaders.
Another issue is architectural competitions. In those for even small buildings, the criterion for admission is the realization of a project of a specific type, with a specific area, which often completely eliminates young architects from participation.

Easier start in the profession, that is?
It seems that the current situation is the result of many factors. The very process of educating young architects should balance between theory and practice, which means that the staff should largely consist of architects who practice and run successful studios. During their studies, students should be encouraged to do internships, placements, and interact with the environment in which they will later operate.
Of course, architects have the greatest influence on the reality of young architects. We are the ones who shape the conditions in which we all (regardless of age) function every day with our activity, basis, reliability or valuation of design work.
