Center decomposed into modules - Architecture Laboratory project

20 of April '22

How to shape the solid in a space dominated by greenery? How not to lose the natural character of the place? When must architecture fit into the local context, and when not? Architects from the Architecture Laboratory sought answers on how to create a design that correlates, rather than dominates.

In search of urban form

The project was made for a competition to design an architectural and urban planning concept for the Center for Cultural Initiatives in Komorovo. Comoros is a small city that identifies itself as a "Garden City." This directly influenced the project.

The most important design consideration, was to create a place that would not dominate the local character, but would fit into the context. In this case, it was the unique green areas and garden character of the city. The concept is primarily to minimize vehicular traffic. This space is all about relaxation and quiet recreation. No parking spaces were planned within the plot, which was located nearby on Kolejowa Street.

How was the urban planning of the CIK laid out? The main entrance was designed from the street side. Next to it, it was decided to have an additional pathway, where there would be space for sculptures and art installations. Two auditoriums made of wood were also planned next to the building modules. This is the place where it was decided to organize concerts, performances and outdoor activities.

creating a solid coherent with the landscape

The basis of the design was the creation of several detached solids, which allowed for the creation of a free structure. In this way, they create an open space that mimics the shape of the courtyard, allowing the modules to be connected.

Opening to light is important. Each module has wide glazing, which was intentionally opened to the park space. This is one of the elements that allow to connect what is inside with what is outside.

The architects were looking for a friendly solution - hence the solids are uncomplicated and restrained modules with simple shapes. Important for the jury of the competition as well as the designers was to blend the building into the background, which would have been difficult with more amorphous shapes.

functionality above all

How was the functionality of the complex solved? Each of the individual modules can be accessed from the outside, or from the lobby connecting the individual blocks. Openings to the outside allow not only for correlation, but also for the use of the area for the Center's activities. Each block in the building was designed on the basis of a separate function. There are auditoriums, workshops, projection rooms or cafes and offices.
