descriptionOn May 29 of this year, we announced the results of an international competition for male and female students aimed at ideas for expanding or giving new functions to buildings in selected locations in Vienna using wood as the main building material. Students from Poland participated in this edition for the first time. During the award ceremony, the winning designers were presented, and the winning teams received cash prizes totaling 16,000 euros. The award ceremony was held atVienna University of Technology.
This year 166 design teams from ten countries competed for the prize in the international competition, organized by proHolz Austria in cooperation with proHolz Bayern. Students from Austria, Germany, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro and China entered. A jury of experts selected three winning projects, one special prize and six honorable mentions.
An independent jury of experts evaluated the competition entries anonymously. There was one winning project for each construction site. The awards went to:
- school expansion: Felix Hasselblatt and Finn Mäger (Vienna University of Technology, Institute of Architecture and Design).
- block edge addition: Maximilian Huber, Aaron Michel, Robert Faul (Vienna University of Technology, Institute of Architectural Sciences, Department of Structural Design and Wood Engineering)
- Floor extension: Jeff Weyrich, Johanna Mullins (Vienna University of Technology, Institute of Architecture and Design).
Two honorable mentions were also awarded in each category, and in addition Valentin Donath, Sarah Heuser, Elisa Knemeyer (Vienna University of Technology, Institute of Architecture, Department of Structural Design and Wood Engineering) received a special award. Their contribution to the floor extension was especially recognized because the design incorporated building materials from the existing building, and thus focused on reuse and a closed-loop economy.
- The submitted projects show that the students carefully studied the construction task and common methods of wood construction in order to then select and apply the right structure for the right task. The award-winning projects are characterized by functional and architectural quality, integration with the urban landscape and thoughtful wooden construction," says architect and jury chair Katharina Bayer, summarizing the results of the competition. - In addition, the award winners also addressed important issues for the future, and thus reflect the desire of the younger generation to contribute to climate protection, resource conservation and recyclability in their work in the future.
