Atelier FCJZ

Atelier Feichang Jianzhu (FCJZ) was founded in 1993 in the United States by Yung Ho Chang and Lu Lijia. Over the past three decades, the studio has emphasized research and methodology development, consistently striving for innovation in the design of buildings ranging in scale from private homes to industrial parks. FCJZ is also involved in design in many other fields, from scenography to jewelry. The Atelier's work has been repeatedly published in prestigious magazines and on architecture and design portals.

Over the years, FCJZ has developed a unique approach to architecture, which can be described as the simultaneous design of space, structure and scenario. "Scenario" refers to the use, function, program or life, as well as the way they are formally implemented. All three components-space, structure and scenario-have a formal aspect, and form can be the organizational backbone for each of them separately or for all of them together. While these components have always been the essence of architecture, it is only in recent decades that they have reached an unprecedented level of integration and equivalence, especially with the increasing involvement of architects in the programming process.

The design process in FCJZ can begin with any of these three components, but it is crucial that the other two be incorporated as soon as possible so that they can be developed as a whole. With this approach, a building can be designed based on a specific structural system using a specific material, or as a pure space. The end result can be both physical spaces and objects, as well as proposals for their use, reminiscent of product manuals. FCJZ combines an idea of the ways in which people interact with a project with the design process itself. This approach explains the ease with which the studio explores other areas of design, such as furniture, products and clothing. The architectural triad - space, structure and scenario - inspire each other, enabling new spaces, structures, scenarios or simply new ways of living.
