Context, man, space. Architecture in three words according to Alexander Jankowski

14 of January '21

"10 Questions to..." is a series of short interviews with architects and female architects, to whom we address the same pool of questions. In today's installment of the mini-interview, Aleksander Jankowski, an interior architect from the Warsaw-based Jankowski and Opyrchał studio, answered our ten questions.

Aleksander Jankowski - studied at the Faculty of Architecture at the Warsaw University of Technology and the Faculty of Architecture at the Lodz University of Technology. Since 2002, together with Agata Opyrchał (graduate of the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow), they have been running the author's studio JIO (Jankowski and Opyrchał) specializing in interior design of single-family houses and apartments. A member of the Association of Interior Designers, he is co-responsible for organizing and implementing training initiatives for SAW member architects.

1 Architecture in three words...?

Context, human, space.

2. the three most important buildings for you...?

These days it's family buildings:
- our simple summer house in the countryside,
- the massive social-realist block where we live,
- the sophisticated early modernist townhouse where we work.

3. the most important book on architecture...?

There are many. I collect historical biographies of architects, especially the lesser-known ones. I admire creative people.

4. most inspiring city and why...?

Warsaw - for the energy.

5. architect with whom you would like to design something and why...?

Lucjan Korngold, because it is impossible, and I like historical fantasy and good architecture that does not lie.

6. hand drawing or computer drawing?

Drawing is thinking. Almost meaningless, nevertheless my heart is with the pencil.

7. mockup or 3D model?

3D model - pragmatically, mock-up - for art.

8. modernism or postmodernism?

Modernism, of course, but I value human genius. I see its reflections in every style.

9. working after hours or sports?

Work just like sports is a great pleasure. I choose according to the need, I do not like to limit my time.

10. architecture or business?

One and the other, it goes without saying.
