Well-chosen membranes can also significantly increase the energy efficiency of the entire building. It is the roof that traps the heat going up in winter and limits the sun's influence on the building in summer. Up to 20 to 40 percent of heat can escape through an uninsulated or poorly constructed roof. By contrast, a proper membrane reduces air exchange by as much as 30 percent.
