Elegance from brass

15 of October '23

Brass is a popular material for door hardware and window handles. But how is it that brass is still so popular, along with aluminum, stainless steel and plastics?

The use of brass as a material for door hardware has a long tradition - an alloy of copper and zinc was often used, especially in the 19th century. The economic boom of the Risorgimento period in Italy - similar to the Wilhelminian period in Germany - resulted in increased housing construction and high demand for fittings. The era was characterized by spacious interiors, ornate facades and numerous decorations on everyday objects - including door handles and window handles.

Large, often conical handles and signs were particularly modern and richly decorated at the time - the more ornamentation they had, the more valuable they were considered. The gold-colored material was also used in a variety of ways in handmade art objects, since an effect similar to real gold could be achieved more cheaply.

Decorated shapes could be particularly well created using the sand casting process. The brass was liquefied under heat and poured into a sand mold, which cracked during the process and therefore could only be used once, but offered many possibilities for shaping.

Today, brass is forged traditionally: the material is heated to softness and then pressed into a mold under high pressure. Experts call this the drop-forging process.

Bergamo series - elegance from brass

The Bergamo series also uses brass, and with its conically shaped handle neck ending in a flat, clearly accentuated handle, it harks back to the design language of the time - even if the look is more reminiscent of the completely ornament-free Bauhaus style. The brass material makes the handle feel pleasant to the touch today, just as it did in the past.

Many fashionable colors

A number of different fashionable surfaces make all three series the ideal partner for different residential concepts. Dark handle surfaces, such as anthracite and black, create striking accents in a room and can, for example, add even more elegance to a subdued furnishing style. Copper- and brass-colored handles make a room look cozy and suit luxuriously designed rooms, as well as Scandinavian-inspired interiors.

Elegant matte chrome surfaces reinterpret the classic world of door and window handle colors. The satin and chrome surfaces of the Bergamo, Canberra and Macau brass series are equipped with Resista® and therefore receive a 10-year surface warranty. This means that the high quality appearance is maintained even during intensive use, including in harsh climatic conditions.

Easy installation and proven burglary protection techniques

Equipped with HOPPE Quick Release, interior door handle sets can be installed quickly and easily. No prior technical knowledge is required - the handles are simply assembled. A specially developed clamping mechanism ensures that the handles sit securely on the door and there is no play.

Installation of the window handles is also extremely easy and can be done in minutes, even for a layman. Since the holes for standard window handles are standardized, existing holes can be used. The window handles of the three brass series have a stem called VarioFit®, which continuously adjusts to the depth of the window profile: it compensates for differences in stem length of up to 10 millimeters. This means that Bergamo series window handles fit all popular window profiles. All you have to do is attach it, tighten it and you're done!

And for those who appreciate protection against burglary: the Bergamo, Canberra and Macau window handles use Secustik® technology, and thus basic security against burglary.

This means that the integrated locking mechanism makes it difficult to move the hardware from the outside - a burglar is unable to turn the bolt through the opening from the outside. This extra protection can even be heard: when the handle is turned, a soft click can be heard as the locking mechanism snaps into place.

The Bergamo series is available as a family of products and includes interior door sets, window handles and sliding door handles. Thanks to the wide range, you can achieve a uniform design throughout your home.
