author's description
Piekary Śląskie, is known as the spiritual capital of Upper Silesia, thanks to the annual pilgrimages of men and women to the Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Bartholomew. For years they have been facing socio-economic as well as environmental problems. The paper is devoted to the issue of revitalization through creative development strategies. It focuses on analyzing the role of public spaces in urban planning, economics and society. In the area between Bytomska, Wojska Polskiego, Inwalidów Wojennych and Wyzwolenia Streets in Piekary Slaskie, an architectural and urban planning project was created, assuming the creation of a Local Cultural Center with public space and residential development with services. The study focuses on the spatial relationship between the iconic Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Bartholomew in Piekary Slaskie and the designed Local Cultural Center. As a result of the analysis and design activities, a concept was created to connect the two places with one common public space and accompanying functions supporting educational and pro-social activities. The impact of the design activities is to revitalize a dormant part of the city and give residents a space for leisure and self-development. Users will have the opportunity to engage in social activities and actively participate in cultural life.
