Gdynia Modernism in Lens 2024

The 14th edition of the photo contest "Gdynia Modernism in Lens" organized by the Gdynia Development Agency is underway. The purpose of the competition is to promote the aesthetic, architectural and historical qualities of the city.

purpose

The purpose of the photo contest is to promote the aesthetic, architectural and historical qualities of the city of Gdynia and modernist architecture. For the organizers, what matters most is the idea, composition and compliance with the theme.

terms and conditions

The competition is open and participation is free of charge.

Works may be submitted to the competition, divided into the following categories:

  • "CA" - "Man and architecture " - the most interesting frames presenting the interaction of man and modernist architecture, both sets and single shots in the spirit of street photography. Works that create an engaging story, narratives about the city, people and buildings (frames from Polish and European cities),
  • "SFO" - "Form and Light " - a game of chiaroscuro in the architecture of modernist Gdynia, both photographs of silhouettes - blocks of buildings, as well as fragments of tenements or public buildings, as well as their interiors. Frames in which light plays the role of the main architect of the image of the building, emphasizes its character, highlights its function or affects emotional and aesthetic impressions,
  • "GDM" - "Signs of the Times - Gdynia Modernism Detail " - frames of original, rescued details of Gdynia modernism, which after years have become witnesses of history, specific signs of the times,
  • "AI " - "Archi-Icons " - original, fresh, unusual look at the most famous icons of modernism - sets of 3-4 frames of a selected object - representing the canon of Gdynia modernism from the historic Downtown area (up to 2 objects/sets),
  • "MP" - "Modernism on the go" - Frames of modernist architecture taken during travels, including trips to well-known centers of modernism, in Poland, Europe and the world. Photographs that highlight the most important features of "modern architecture" or represent selected trends of 20th century modernism,
  • "AN" - "Architecture and Nature " - frames of modernist architecture of Gdynia in strong correlation with nature; reference to the idea of garden districts, inspiring accents of greenery in the architecture of Gdynia.

A participant may submit up to six photos in each of the above categories. Each photo may be submitted to the contest in only one category. Photos may be taken in black and white or color technique.

Only photos that are the result of a single exposure are eligible for the competition. Photomontages and multiple exposures will be disqualified. Standard digital processing of photos is allowed - contrast, brightness, white balance, color saturation, sharpening.

  • Deadline for submission of works: until August 14, 2024, at 4 pm.

prizes

The following prizes will be awarded in the competition:

  • 1st Prize - 2,000 PLN net,
  • II Prize - PLN 1,000 net, a book and a set of souvenirs of the Gdynia Modernism Route,
  • Third Prize - PLN 500 net and a voucher to the Riviera Center stores worth PLN 200,
  • Special Pr izes - awarded by the competition partners, Gdynia Conservation Studio - Studniak Gallery in the category "Signs of the Times - Gdynia Modernism Detail" in the amount of PLN 1,000, and the Riviera Center in Gdynia in the category "Man and Architecture" in the form of vouchers with a total value of PLN 2,000 to the stores in the Riviera Center.
  • The Audience Award - the two highest-ranked winners in the audience poll voting (during the exhibition) will receive a voucher worth PLN 400 to the Riviera Center stores.

The works of the awarded and honorable mention participants will be published on the organizers' websites and will participate in a post-competition photo exhibition during the Architecture Weekend taking place inAugust 26 to September 14, 2024 at the Gallery of the Gdynia Film Center, as well as in a series of at least two group exhibitions of the Gdynia Modernism Route between September 2024 and May 2025.

jury

The jury of the competition consists of:

  • Kacper Kowalski - visual artist, photographer, pilot and paraglider. Three-time winner of the World Press Photo award, author of photography books. He is an architect by education. He lives and works in Gdynia,
  • Przemek Kozlowski - photographer, journalist, co-founder and long-time curator of the competition. Leads photo walks of the Route of Modernism, co-founder of the collective "Testigo Documentary",
  • Ivo Ledwożyw - photographer and promoter of modern architecture, lecturer at the WFH Sopot School of Photography - a long-time partner of the competition. He lives in Gdynia.
  • Anna Rezulak - well-known Tri-City photographer, specializes in reportage photography and cultural events, cooperates with the Gdynia Film School, associated with KFP (Kosycarz Foto Press), winner of the Pomeranian Press Photography Contest Gdańsk Press Photo 2023,
  • Rafał Malko - studio photographer, professional photojournalist, architectural photographer, contributor to leading press and news editors, winner of prestigious awards,
  • Sandra Szmigiel - photographer, photo-editor, organizer of artistic and cultural events in Gdynia, Gdansk and Warsaw. For 2 years she has been associated with the Gdynia Development Agency, the organizer of the competition.
  • Jacek Debis and Aleksandra Czech - curators of the competition, also acting as secretaries of the competition.
