Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R)

Founded in 1981, Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) is a design studio whose work encompasses architecture, urbanism, installation art, multimedia performance, digital media and print.

DS+R focuses primarily on cultural and civic projects, exploring the changing role of institutions and the future of cities. The studio is based in New York City and employs more than 100 architects, designers, artists and researchers, working under the leadership of four partners: Elizabeth Diller, Ricardo Scofidio, Charles Renfro and Benjamin Gilmartin.

DS+R's work, which transcends traditional genres, has been recognized in TIME magazine's "100 Most Influential People" list and honored by the MacArthur Foundation with the first grant awarded in the field of architecture. The foundation described Diller and Scofidio as "architects who have created an alternative form of architectural practice that combines design, performance and electronic media with theory and cultural and architectural criticism. Their work explores how space functions in our culture, and proves that architecture, understood as a physical manifestation of social relations, is ubiquitous - not just in buildings."
