Daniel Libeskind

Daniel Libeskind (born May 12, 1946 in Lodz, Poland) is an American contemporary architect of Polish-Jewish descent who has had a significant impact on the development of modern architecture. His work is associated with modernism, postmodernism and neo-modernism. He is also an architectural theorist and stage designer.

In 1959, the Libeskind family moved to New York City, where Daniel graduated from Bronx High School of Science in 1965 and obtained U.S. citizenship the same year. Initially involved in music, he eventually decided to pursue a career in architecture, studying at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science in New York, where he earned his degree in 1970. Two years later, he completed postgraduate studies in architectural history and theory at the University of Essex.

Since 1990, Libeskind has been registered as an architect in Germany with the Bund Deutscher Architekten (BDA). During his career, he has been a lecturer at a number of universities in the United States and Germany, including the Karlsruhe School of Design since 1999. He currently lectures at the University of Toronto. His work is often attributed to the trend of deconstructivism, characterized by the breakdown of traditional forms and structures.

He runs the architectural studio Studio Libekind.
