Modern solar facades - photovoltaics integrated into the building

01 of July '23

From the series "Facade and wall materials—trends 2023"

One of the innovative solutions used in modern architecture is the installation of photovoltaic modules on the facades of ventilated buildings. This method of installation offers a number of advantages. First of all, it allows easier implementation of photovoltaic technology, while being an additional protection for the system itself against subsidence of the building structure. In addition, the placement of photovoltaic panels on a ventilated facade can contribute to significant energy savings, up to 40%, compared to traditional facades. In addition, it provides protection against the risk of damage to facade materials.

Before deciding to invest in photovoltaics on the facade, it is worth focusing on the mounting substructure itself—it is on it that the durability of the installation will depend, as well as the safety of its use. One of the best and most innovative ways to mount photovoltaic panels on the facade, are BIPV systems from AGS.

They are available in two types: bonded and mechanically fastened. Adhesive substructures are used for mounting frameless—glass-to-glass type modules, while mechanically fastened substructures, for mounting modules with frames. In both systems, panels can be mounted both vertically and horizontally. Commercially available multi-colored cells, framed or frameless modules, and the possibility of using any arrangement of modules, gives architects great design possibilities.

Photovoltaics on the facade of a building has some peculiarities compared to other methods. Energy generation may be lower during the summer months, but increases during the winter. As a result, energy production can reach about 70% of the maximum value. The solar energy performance obtained from a photovoltaic facade is satisfactory, as long as installation errors that can affect energy production efficiency are avoided.

Photovoltaic panels mounted on ventilated facades are usually installed on a solid substructure. It is important that the grate is strong enough to ensure the proper functioning of the entire photovoltaic system. In addition, it is necessary to maintain an adequate distance between the grating and the structural wall to place thermal insulation and a ventilation gap. This distance is adjusted according to the architectural conditions of the building, the thickness of the insulation layer and the faults of the structural elements. Before installing the panels, it is necessary to design a special substructure that will work optimally with the entire photovoltaic system.

High-quality substructures for photovoltaic panels on the façade are offered by AGS.
AGS's façade PV substructure, the so-called BIPV system, has a 20 mm gap between the insulating material and the top cladding. The structure is designed to ensure improved thermal insulation of the building and proper moisture drainage. The system is based on passive steel consoles, coated with an innovative metallic coating for long-lasting corrosion protection.

Parameters of AGS façade systems

Installation of photovoltaic panels on a vertical wall requires compliance with current regulations and legal considerations. When realizing this kind of investment, it is necessary to take into account, first of all, its utility and fire safety.

Photovoltaic facades offered by AGS:

  • meet the new requirements of the Technical Conditions, related to the heat coefficient (Uc max= 0.20 W/m2⋅K),
  • meet the requirements of §225 of the Technical Conditions regarding the non-decay of façade cladding for as long as 120 minutes,
  • are resistant to corrosion even in aggressive environmental conditions of corrosion class C5,
  • are qualified as NRO—non-fire-spreading.

The advantage of AGS is undoubtedly the high quality of the offered systems and the parameters supported by studies and the required documentation. Thanks to the confirmed technical properties, AGS photovoltaic facades are considered the best quality structures on the market.

The Company also offers mounting systems for ventilated facades, masonry (clinker) facades, heavy cladding, as well as passive consoles and building profiles. The company's offer is complemented by a wide range of consulting and technical services necessary for the proper execution of the investment process in the selection and delivery of fastening systems. The company provides its customers with products of the highest quality, using the effect of experience and competence of its employees, as well as cooperation with major scientific and research centers.

The company's customers also appreciate the cooperation with a qualified team of engineers who design customized fastenings, tailored to customers' expectations and technical conditions. Not without significance is the central location of the plant and an extensive and fully automated machinery park, which ensures full production independence and efficient execution of orders.
