Ecology in the bathroom - a trend or something more?

04 of October '23

When designing a bathroom, we turn our attention to how it will look. We browse interior trends on the Internet, look for inspiration on social networks, look at catalogs of equipment manufacturers. And that's a good thing! Design is important, because the interiors we stay in should please us every time we use them. It is worth following trends, but with reason. So what is an equally important trend in bathroom design? There can be only one answer: ecology.

Ecology - meaning what?

When we say ecological bathroom, do we mean a bathtub made of wood? Certainly not, although there are beautiful models of washbasins made of this raw material available on the market. Ecology is, first of all, designing the bathroom in such a way that using it requires the least possible water consumption. It means choosing the right basin faucets, betting on rain showers instead of the classic shower and following a few tricks, which we heartily encourage you to do.

Small habits, big effects

Did you know that by saving water, we also reduce greenhouse gas emissions? The water industry is one of the largest consumers of energy in the world. By reducing water consumption, we can help reduce the amount of energy needed to transport and treat water. In addition, wasting water depletes groundwater, which consequently leads to land subsidence and can cause permanent damage to the landscape. There are really many such examples, so it is worth remembering that the introduction of small habits, can carry a whole range of positive changes for the environment.

So how to save water in the bathroom?

First of all, it's the washbasin area. This is where every drop of water counts. So it's worth replacing sink faucets with economical ones, equipped with an ecological aerator - they can reduce water consumption even by half. KFA Armatura offers many interesting solutions in this regard. Special attention should be paid to the novelty - faucets from the Otava collection. In this type of faucets the water flow is only 6 liters per minute. For comparison - in the case of faucets without a suitable aerator, this value varies from 10 to even 13 liters. Thus, the use of ecological faucets can give annual savings of 24 thousand liters of water, and the comfort of washing hands is the same.

How do we know this? Let's take under the magnifying glass a family of 4 living in an apartment (without a garden). We can divide the water consumption into categories to make it easier to count. The first: sink + sink (25%) and the second: bathtub/shower + toilet + washing machine, dishwasher (75%). Typical faucets use about 12 l/min, and economy faucets, only 6 l/min. If the monthly water consumption of such a household is about 16 m³/month, and thanks to saving faucets can reduce it by 12.5%, we have 24 thousand liters of water less per year! And that's just replacing the faucets with ones equipped with a suitable ecological aerator.

By the way, the Otava series is distinguished by its interesting design, durable coating and is available in two finishes: chrome and matte black. So it will fit perfectly into any bathroom.

Bathtub or shower?

In designing an eco-friendly bathroom, it is equally important to plan the interior in such a way that it is possible to use a shower and not just a bathtub. However, this doesn't mean that we have to give it up completely - it's enough to use clever solutions, such as a bathtub screen plus a rain shower with a bathtub spout and thermostatic faucet. This is because such a faucet allows us to reduce the amount of water by up to a dozen percent, thanks to serving it at the right temperature. In practice, we can save up to 150 liters of water per week.

There is also an interesting solution in the Logon collection of sprinklers with folding spout, which will help us take care of less water consumption if we choose to take a bath only occasionally. KFA Armatura products from this series are also available in matte black finish, which is a hit of recent seasons when it comes to bathroom design trends. The comfort of taking a bath under a rain shower is truly magnificent, and the water savings when you give up filling the bathtub once is up to several dozen (!) liters.

Replace, don't throw away

Another way to create an eco-friendly bathroom is to take care of your faucets - if something leaks or drips, sometimes all you need to do is replace the gasket or switch. Manufacturers such as KFA Armatura take care of the availability of replacement parts. And if your faucet drips, you can waste up to several thousand liters of water a year.

Ordering spare parts from KFA Armatura is a simple process. An intuitive search engine available on the manufacturer's website helps you quickly find the right components from among an extensive database. All you need to do is specify what needs to be replaced and then select the appropriate product. The system will instantly present the available options. If it turns out that the needed part is not there, you can contact an advisor by phone or e-mail.

The decision to repair rather than replace the bathroom faucet ultimately has a very positive impact on the environment. Reducing the amount of waste generated, as well as saving water, makes our bathroom far more planet-friendly. Many malfunctions seem more complicated than they actually are. Often, all it takes is a little willingness, the purchase of the right components and some work to restore the fixtures to a "second life."

Bathroom life-hacks

It's also worth learning a few tricks that will make it easier to take care of our environment. These are simple ways to realistically reduce water consumption, and none of them require a huge investment. One of them is to buy a special shower stopper (the cheapest one with a suction cup is the expense of literally a few zlotys). One minute of pouring water equals 8-12 liters of water, so reducing the time of using the shower from 10 to 5 minutes saves up to 60 liters (!) of water.

Another is to run the washing machine only when it is full and necessarily use EKO programs, which use less water and energy. When buying a new washing machine, check how much water it uses per wash cycle. Choose the most economical one. And finally, remember to always turn off the water when brushing your teeth.

Simple? Simple!
