Ducted air conditioning in a single-family home - key facts

02 of April '24

Ducted air conditioning in the home is still relatively uncommon, but against the background of recent years it is gaining popularity. It certainly brings many advantages aesthetically and functionally, as it does not require the well-known "boxes" to be hung on the walls. However, before deciding to install ducted air conditioning, it is worth reviewing some important details.

What is ducted air conditioning?

You can easily guess that ducted air conditioning delivers cooled air to rooms through ducts hidden under the ceiling. It is possible to use one air conditioning unit for several rooms that are close to each other (2 or 3). However, this can lead to the problem of uneven cooling, especially when the areas of these rooms differ. For example, if room A is 10 sq m and room B is 20 sq m, the same amount of cooled air will be supplied to both. This can result in a temperature difference between the two. To cope with this phenomenon, consider the AIRZONE system, present in Rotenso units (model Nevo). It allows you to regulate the temperature in different zones of the house. However, it is worth remembering that we are unlikely to be able to effectively cool the entire house from a single air conditioning unit.

The system evenly distributes cooling throughout the building, without requiring several indoor units that are installed in each room.

With the right design, ducted air conditioning is almost unnoticeable. The ducts supplying cool air are hidden in the suspended ceiling, and the only visible element is actually the supply hole (anemostat). For this reason, many people choose to install ducted air conditioning, as it does not require the use of indoor units, which do not always blend in with the decor of the room.

Is ducted air conditioning for a single-family home a sensible solution?

Ducted air conditioning in a single-family home makes sense as much as possible, especially for buildings with a larger area. The cool air is evenly distributed throughout the rooms, making it possible to maintain satisfactory thermal comfort in all parts of the building.

Remember, however, that the installation of ducted air conditioning in a single-family house requires certain conditions. First of all, adequate space must be set aside in the building for ventilation ducts. The matter may be somewhat difficult in existing houses, but a skilled architect will be able to design the system to achieve the desired efficiency.

The involvement of a specialist in the design of ducted air conditioning is essential, and this matter should not be left to the unskilled or inexperienced. The chosen air conditioner must have the right power to ensure efficient operation. This translates into the available compression, that is, the ability of the fans to "push" air through the air ducts. If the length of the installation were too long and the available compression too low, cool air would not reach the rooms as expected. In the opposite situation, when the installation is too short, the compression would be too high, and the intensity of the cool air blowing would cause discomfort.

These are just a few of the factors that need to be taken into account when designing ducted air conditioning. As you can see, the undertaking requires considerable knowledge and skill, so it is better to leave it to qualified specialists, as they will tailor the system to your needs and capabilities.

What are the benefits of using ducted air conditioning?

  • even cooling or heating of rooms - current air conditioners also have a heating function;
  • energy efficiency - duct air conditioners consume minimal energy, resulting in significant savings in bills;
  • aesthetics - the duct air conditioning system does not stand out from the decor of individual rooms, as its elements are hidden, for example, in the suspended ceiling;
  • space saving - duct air conditioners do not take up valuable space in rooms;
  • quiet operation - duct air conditioners do not emit a loud sound, it can be compared to a normal conversation (in addition, when you are close to the device).
